when you try and start it , it sounds like a matalic machine gun??
ive already had it off and had it checked at my local starter guy and it works fine off the machine. the battery is good but ive noticed a square shaped thing under the tank that has a small spark inside its whitish plastic casing (is it a relay?)its a dice shaped cube about 1 inch square
Or may be its somethingelse?? thanks

Can you help us by telling us which model etc?

(I see in your profile you have 1100GS listed but this is in "Airheads")

Bad battery cables, Bad frame grounding (i.e. due to corrosion? check where the Negative joins the gearbox at the speedo cable? If needed take it off emery it and refit) OR a Bad battery

What you are hearing is the solenoid banging in and put with insufficient voltage to complete what it has to to do!

Check the Fluid level in your battery! Or Jump it from a car with GOOD quality jump leads not £5 shite ones

PT . .you have another post about your GS kickstarter not working too. Just wondering if the 2 problems are connected and you have a major prob in the gearbox perhaps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for the imput martin but im sure they're not connected. tried my booster pack and it stops the chattering and now the solinoid just makes a single clonk noise and thats it.
ive taken the starter off again and will get it checked again:thedummy
all my bm's go wrong think i may try 650 wee strom!:augie

Pull the clutch lever in when you try starting it - just in case it is the gearbox.

I assume that the engine turns over OK - not flooded or anything is it ?

Try push-starting it. If that works try re-starting it with a warm engine (e.g. remove as many variables as possible).

Bob.

SUCCESS!!!!:aidan
TWAS THE STARTER MOTOR AFTER ALL:augie
Temperamental starting has become terminal as the magnets have come away and will now be replaced with the new bushes!
Thanks for your hepl and ideas everyone much appiciated:thumb2:beerjug:
