I get a text from Peter at 0500 – do I want to make an earlier start?

Yes, to be honest – I’ve been dozing fitfully for the last two hours or so.

I get showered and dressed, noticing how oddly quiet the house is without my dog Marnie in it...

i-SHGd9Xm-L.jpg

(I sent her to the “Holiday Home for Pets Pie Factory” yesterday).

Whilst getting my kit ready downstairs, I somehow manage to empty the contents of my CamelBak (two litres) onto the lounge floor…
i-GWMjSFs-L.gif

No matter – I refill it with filtered water and prop it up against the wall in the porch.

It’s still there…
i-GWMjSFs-L.gif

I set out on a clear crisp morning, with all the promise of a bright sunny day…

i-QLrm8dL-L.jpg

The sun is low on the horizon behind me and there's a hint of mist coming off the fields...

i-67Hx5CQ-L.jpg

I ride through Great Massingham...

i-WVzk5nV-L.jpg

...and arrive at Peter's house on the dot of 0600...

i-tLCQMtb-L.jpg

...where Jake...

i-bzbZrcH-L.jpg

...is guarding Peter's Tiger 1050.

We set off straight away and ride down the A10...

i-5x3LV3d-L.jpg

...to the A14 and thence the M11 towards London. We stop for a coffee and a bite at Birchanger Services...

i-fhnK9XV-L.jpg

To our deep concern, we discover that there's nowhere to buy a full English. We have to make do with a bacon bap and a coffee from Starbucks - what happened to the Empire? :eek

i-rfW7s8H-L.jpg

I return to the Adv and find a Caterham Seven parked next to it...

i-8sW3zWS-L.jpg

I rather think I've had too many full English breakfasts to fit into one of those... :D

Onward! I'm listening to the remastered recording of Wish You Were Here, having watched an excellent documentary about the making of the album on TV last night...

i-dTFMZBp-L.jpg

...the miles drift by...

i-nsmB6n3-L.jpg

...and pretty soon we're arriving at the Eurotunnel terminal...

i-tJF66Sr-L.jpg

...to check in.

Now, the snag is, we're actually booked on the 1520 train this afternoon - but we try a little charm and the chap agrees to put us on the 1220 for no extra charge...

i-859GjP4-L.jpg

Peter says "Bollocks to this - lets just go to the departure gate and give it a go"
lol8.gif

It works like a charm - right up to when we get a very old fashioned look (from a border guard young enough to be Peter's grandson) and advised to return to the terminal and try again in an hour... :yelrotflm

We do as instructed, watching the world go by...

i-BfWgNVm-L.jpg

Peter continuing a seemingly unending saga of calls about problems with his Orange 'phone contract...

i-fRZDTvM-L.jpg

I spot an interesting looking visitor and get a few snaps - anyone want to guess make/model/year?

i-LCnS3qp-L.jpg

When I get bored enough to photograph seagulls, I know it's time to go...

i-86qrM9t-L.jpg

This time we get through all the checks and are left waiting for another hour or so in the boarding lanes. We eventually get a train half an hour earlier than we were meant to, so can't complain... :D

i-hVNwDbB-L.jpg

i-sCB8GwM-L.jpg

Our fellow two-wheeled travellers are an uncommunicative chap on a Deauville and Tracey...

i-7L5XxhZ-L.jpg

Tracey is riding a Suzuki something or other and is on a 'trial run' testing her kit out for a sponsored trip.
To Romania.
She's apparently going to do 18 countries in 19 days (or the other way around). Not quite sure why she's doing it, but she seems happy enough...

i-V7m3xK9-L.jpg

The train lurches into movement and, just as advertised, drops us off at Calais 35 minutes later. Not as advertised - the air conditioning had apparently been turned off and it's a tad uncomfortable...

i-vwz2TFP-L.jpg

We give Tracey a wave and then set off along the Autoroute heading South East, towards our target for tonight - Nancy.

Nancy - what kind of name is that to give a town?

Peter gets so pissed off with how long an Eddie Stobart lorry is taking to overtake a French truck, he misses the fact that he's in the wrong lane and we miss our junction :yelrotflm

No matter, we're soon back on track and setting a cruising speed of about 135kph down the A16...

i-6fLR4Qb-L.jpg

Motorway riding is never going to be great fun - to pass the time we ride 'Escort' - a skill learned in a previous life, it involves riding in close formation, with the lead rider taking all decisions for the pair.

I'm now listening to a book on disc - A Gentleman and a Spy by Robert Harris - excellent... :thumb2

i-mC9WbWN-L.jpg

We stop for fuel - the Adv is doing around 40mpg at these speeds...

i-JgbGB7b-L.jpg

...we stop for a break and a drink (will look for a replacement CamelBak tomorrow
i-GWMjSFs-L.gif
)...

i-3LvFnGw-L.jpg

Despite the heat, I'm pretty comfortable with all the vents in my jacket open...

i-WGzMnkt-L.jpg

What a healthy dinner...
DukeGirl.gif

i-Hg8PqkG-L.jpg

Onward!

i-nR53gz9-L.jpg

Warning signs tell us that Grand Frère is watching us...

i-XLxtHx5-L.jpg

...and - sure enough - there he is a few klicks later...

i-RwNv87X-L.jpg

Soon we are turned off the Autoroute (total tolls today about €20) and heading down some beautiful D roads towards Nancy...

i-MJ5GzH4-L.jpg

i-Bg2JHJD-L.jpg

Hmm - must be getting close...

i-XdLZCjg-L.jpg

...soon we are arriving...

i-9BNgspf-L.jpg

...at the B&B at Nancy...

i-Zdhr3jf-L.jpg

...where, for our €39 we each get an air conditioned slice of delight...

i-3TpX2G8-L.jpg

...and the bikes get an underground garage...

i-XLnLLT8-L.jpg

I spend a LONG time under the shower and we meet up to go in search of a beer. Unfortunately there are only two restaurants in walking distance and they both demand you order a meal if you want a drink.

i-DFfXhdm-L.jpg

Rude not to, really...

Just shy of 500 miles - a shorter (non-motorway) day tomorrow, I think.

i-wfqVcQV-L.jpg

Nice one Mike, I enjoy your ride reports.:thumb:beerjug:

It took an uncharacteristically long time before you got your first bridge shot in Mike, but I do like this one........

i-wfqVcQV-L.jpg

ISTR you taking another with your reflection from the back of a Merkin tanker..... :clap

Tuned in for more :clap

I don’t sleep brilliantly. Peter knocks on my door at around 0800 and I ablute and pack. The Internet connection from this B&B was – unusually – slow and quite flaky, so I only have about a third of yesterday’s pictures uploaded.

Peter and I have breakfast – the gannets have visited early and there’s not much a choice left. We decide today will be a more sedate ride, with fewer dual carriageways and an early finish…

It's humid and airless in the underground garage and we eventually get started at the crack of 1000...

i-xcF29Jp-L.jpg

The first few klicks are dual carriageway at a speed that allows us to cool off to a more comfortable core temperature...

i-QfwpTPd-L.jpg

We stop for fuel at a small supermarché...

i-JhqW3B9-L.jpg

...and then enter a series of small D roads heading broadly south...

i-2dvZCRM-L.jpg

...absolutely beautiful...

i-TBZWhzL-L.jpg

After about 15 klicks we stop at a village boulangerie...

i-8Xjw787-L.jpg

...here, it seems, we have missed our most natural food-group...

i-jpDp7xP-L.jpg

...so we decide to make do with a pair of freshly made ham, cheese and salad baguettes and some (ahem) healthy dessert.

Putting the food into the capacious top box on the Adv (I only fit it for touring and it mostly just holds waterproofs) - (and baguettes) - we set off once again. Very soon we find a picnic site in a cool and shady area of woodland...

i-CLtTgKZ-L.jpg

...and get busy with lunch...

i-tvCDHH8-L.jpg

Oh, and...

i-M2hNtMb-L.jpg

DukeGirl.gif

We spend an hour or so listening to the utter quiet of the woods - just the drone of the occasional insect to be heard...

Well, that and the sound of our arteries hardening...

i-njc9P2g-L.jpg

Onwards!

i-g37RKsX-L.jpg

We continue down a series of small D roads and through some sleepy villages. Life out here in rural France is still quite simple, it seems...

i-r2z4V8J-L.jpg

...it's a great ride - sometimes it's good to turn up the wick a bit, but most of the time we are moving at a fast mosey...

i-KPmLBdk-L.jpg

Life is good.

i-XtNk5h6-L.jpg

We stop regularly to rehydrate - Peter has his CamelBak, but we halt now and again for a chat and a drink...

i-SS2VCj9-L.jpg

i-XbKMNBC-L.jpg

We find a reasonable sized town and I ask at the Seat dealership if there is a sporting goods shop in town. I am directed to...

i-dxwbN4d-L.jpg

...Go Sport, who supply me with a drinking system that appears to be the same price as a CamelBak, but isn't a CamelBak. No worries - I buy it and will start using it in the morning... :thumb

i-K9xh4Wm-L.jpg

We continue South and note that the weather has a thundery look to it. We're both tired after a long day yesterday, so we set the B&B in Besançon in the GPS and start motoring...

i-BGs53KF-L.jpg

Pretty soon we're entering the outskirts of Besançon and using the automated check-in feature (which - it has to be said - didn't work exactly as advertised... :D

i-6CRtCRT-L.jpg

Never mind, were soon each ensconced in a large, cool air-conditioned room with very reliable and remarkably fast Internet connection. I upload two day's worth of pictures in under ten minutes... :eek

After a long shower and a tidy up, Peter and I wander across the busy dual carriageway opposite the hotel to "Le Grill du Trappeur"...

i-vKJR4Fx-L.jpg

...where Peter has an escalope of veal (I think)...

i-bDVpcFd-L.jpg

...and I have a speciality of the house - a casserole of Bison, Kangaroo and Antelope...

i-sJwPm4v-L.jpg

Rude not to have a pud afterwards really...

i-P5G7Z4n-L.jpg

I pay the (not unsubstantial) bill and we trundle back over the road.

An excellent day - we're definitely on holiday... :thumb2

i-pnGQswz-L.jpg

...and arrive at Peter's house on the dot of 0600...

i-tLCQMtb-L.jpg

We set off straight away and ride down the A10...

i-5x3LV3d-L.jpg

Just picked up on this thread.

Thought I got woken up early by 2 noisy motorbikes going down Sandy Lane :augie

Have a good trip out chaps.

Waiting to read the next instalment.

Good one Mike, we haven't had a proper one of these for ages.

Keep it coming.

28th June 2014

I sleep (relatively) well and the alarm wakes me at 0600. A quick check out of the window shows unbroken blue sky.

This is not forecast to continue.

The whole of Northern and mid-France is due for bad weather today and we made a decision last night to make an early start and haul derriere towards the south coast to try to beat the weather…

i-Jwt572Q-L.jpg

By the time I have got my kit down to the bike, the sky has clouded over and there's a definite feel of rain in the air...

i-WvcSBk8-L.jpg

We're out on the road heading south by 0700, deciding to leave breakfast to the first fuel stop.

i-NK2SDgc-L.jpg

So far we're both dressed in dry weather gear, but I think this may change...

i-JMqV585-L.jpg

We stop at an Agip service station on an Aire and breakfast on sandwiches and other crap...

i-tHLnQnx-L.jpg

Then we're back on the road heading south at 130kph - we encounter several patches of light rain - just enough to freckle the front of my gloves, but not enough to stop and change...

i-kdgP9RN-L.jpg

Eventually it starts a light drizzle that looks like it might last a while, so we stop and get kitted up. Whilst we do so, the rain stops. We ride on until the sun comes out and then decide to stop in another Aire and de-kit.

i-8t3V4qF-L.jpg

It starts raining again as we set off
i-GWMjSFs-L.gif

i-9gCjVHV-L.jpg

Thankfully it's a light passing shower and we're soon travelling south...

i-sgr9kzW-L.jpg

...at 130kph enjoying a warm dry day...

i-M3gfhSk-L.jpg

We get off the Autoroute at Grenoble and join Route Napoleon...

i-z373jcK-L.jpg

...which is just spectacular to look at...

i-rffSXT3-L.jpg

...and to ride...

i-sf6J6pQ-L.jpg

...although the weather is always threatening to spoil everything...

i-thCT2Bf-L.jpg

We stop...

i-hBjv2zx-L.jpg

...for a spot of lunch...

i-jGvbkpd-L.jpg

...where we are served with a "Steak Sandwich"...

i-XgC2VNn-L.jpg

...which turns out to be a luke-warm burger in a baguette. The only memorable thing about the lunch was Peter asking the chef chap whether he had any mayonnaise - "No problem" he says and makes some there and then...

i-bq9ptsW-L.jpg

We've stopped for just over an hour and the traffic past us - mostly heading south (like us) has been continuous...

i-5jJP2sN-L.jpg

We re-join Route Napoleon (for a General, he didn't exactly take a direct route, it has to be said :D) and enjoy the ride...

i-29m5PMN-L.jpg

The weather keeps reminding us we're a gust of wind away from a serious squall...

i-8L3JxtZ-L.jpg

...and our minds turn to an early stop...

i-vw5WLzz-L.jpg

Wait a minute!

i-hr5PFGF-L.jpg

What's this strange looking vehicle? (Congrats to Hairnet and Trashcan for successfully recognising Thursday's car as a 1950 Pontiac Chieftain)

i-mnrsqL9-L.jpg

Would anyone like to guess make/model/year?

i-7xnP45c-L.jpg

Onward!

i-X5tbp3s-L.jpg

We arrive at Gap at just after 1500, but decide it has been a long day, so look for an hotel...

i-mnrFW7r-L.jpg

€59 for each room...

i-RNH54kH-L.jpg

...with an exceptional shower and free Wi-Fi. After unpacking (during which it pissed down :thumb2) and an ablute we meet up for a couple of beers.

A good day...

i-VDvchPm-L.jpg

Good stuff and excellent photos. I enjoyed listening to A Gentleman and a Spy a few weeks ago. Particularly well read I thought.

28th June 2014

(Later)

Peter and I enjoy a couple of beers on the terrace...

i-TZFMSCJ-L.jpg

Then return to our respective rooms - I write today's journal entry. At 1930 we meet in the restaurant for a splendid dinner...

i-QtNbWS9-L.jpg

i-stcCdbF-L.jpg

including an extensive cheeseboard...

i-knN48nb-L.jpg

...with a mouse-shaped cheese knife...

i-zcrBbbD-L.jpg

...and heroic puds...

i-9DgrKtf-L.jpg

i-hLXmpC3-L.jpg

...followed by a quiet coffee and cognac outside.

i-FWtxDm8-L.jpg

Good day :thumb2

Wait a minute!

Correct! Must have been a tad under-powered...

Pissing down all night here - considering having a day off the bikes, but about to have breakfast to discuss this whilst searching for a weather forecast that agrees with our plans... :D
