Nav 5 map update

If using a Mac to delete files, they are not actually removed from the device, unless you empty the wastebasket before disconnecting. The files will still take up space even though you can't see them.

This is a very handy little utility to assist with cleaning up and disconnecting the device quickly. http://www.javawa.nl/cleaneject.html

on the image of removed files the gmapprom.img is your main map file, the one in the expanded map folder called city navigator ntu 2017.img is also a map image but looking at the size of it compared to the deleted one i would say it is not a complete europe map 4gb vs 2.2gb. i dont see a gmap3d.img anywhere and you say the JCV folder is empty, that seems odd but it would not stop the unit from working or downloading, in fact it would give you more space as they are largish files. when you have your new card remove the small one and replace with the new one formated correctly connect it to your mac and run express it should show available update or reinstal update, not sure on a mac but there should be an advanced setting to save to pc and device make sure you choose that, sit back and let it run, some people have said they have had an issue with express and their macs giving errors and not installing the maps, i can not comment on this as i dont have a mac, but unless it flags up an error let it run till it is finished, and i would advise against doing the update over a wireless connection, plug into the router or network via a cable.

Hi, thanks again. Yes I think the file called city navigator ntu 2017.img is the file Garmin Express installed yesterday. I did unselect most of eastern europe and the install was approx 2.2GB.
I definitely did not delete the gmap3d.img file from my device. What would the screen look like when this is being used? I cant remember ever seeing 3d images of buildings.
Thanks for the advice about updating, I always use a usb cable for that.
Cheers

I never knew that, Hmmm I also think I have emptied the trash can without the nav connected. Does this mean I can never delete the files now?
DO macs not overwrite deleted files when space is low like windows does?

You can't connect the Nav V (or most other regular GPS devices) to a computer with anything but a USB lead.

The advice given related to not relying on a wireless connection when making some (possibly) critical downloads and updates but use a suitable cable to attach your computer directly to the router / network and then your GPS device to the computer, via its regular USB connection.

thats exactly the way i was referring to, i should have made it clear, thanks Wapping. with reference to the 3d.img, you would only be able to see its effects when zoomed in near a place where the data is applicable , in my opinion its not usefull, but to find out if it is there, if you were to look at your screen and go to something like tools / settings / map / and map info you would or should see it there listed with your map info, not to sure if this is the correct way to find it on the nav v but it will be similar, maybe someone will confirm. and also relating to the above post from chrisjk sorry i was unaware of that with not being mac user, i will note it for future reference, i would imagine it was similar to windows hidden files.

I have now installed a 32GB card.
Still getting the error when trying to install.
I had to remove Express from my computer as it wouldnt update and it was this that may have caused problems.
Installed the latest version of Express and reinstalled my maps.
All seems to be ok.
Just need to test if its got the junction and 3d.img working.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Your JCV file should be in the JCV folder and the 3d.img you should see under map info from the unit or in the main root of the drive. all being well its now sorted.
