As I'm reliably informed that the 660 and Nav IV are to all intents & purposes one and the same, I'm posting this question here as I don't see a Nav IV Forum. I'm sure a Mod will move it if I'm wrong! :rob

I've bought a K1600GTL which came with a built-in Nav IV but unfortunately it didn't come with a manual or any cables. So, the first thing I need to do I guess is register it on my Garmin account? (I still use a Streetpilot on my GSA)

The Nav IV map is out of date as well. I'm presuming that map updates come via my PC as per the Streetpilot but I have nothing with which to connect the unit to my PC as the sockets are completely different to my old kit.

Looking at the only sockets on the Nav IV which are both round, is the cable I need proprietary (Garmin) or is there another (read "cheaper") way of doing it? Anyone got one that they don't want? Also, I guess it's time to ditch the Streetpilot as its beginning to hiccup so I'll need a power cable for the GSA as well so I can swap it over depending on which bike I'm riding. Any spare kit lying about? :augie

So, to summarise

1) Do I register a BMW Navigator on my Garmin account?
2) Do I need a proper Garmin cable to connect it to my PC?
3) Has anybody got surplus to requirements cabling that would be useful? (I've already found a car kit).

Thanks in anticipation,:thumb2

To conect it to your PC you only need a mini USB the socket on the NAV4 will be a USB and if it is like the 660 it is behind the battery cover any old mini usb will work
AAs for registering it on your account if you have the lifetime maps then yes if you do not currently have them and the Unit was sold with them the previous owner will have to de register it so you can !

It will update via the pc/mac providing that the unit has lifetime map updates if not you will need to purchase them (liftime) or a one time map update(cant see the point in that) once the lifetime maps are purchased you will get 2 updates a year (this applies to the 660 not sure of the nav IV ) as above make sure you purchase a power and data usb cable, and if the unit has lifetime maps there is no need to register or de register the unit as the map updates stay with the unit and not you.

Tossers to the rescue again! :thumb

I've now downloaded the manual (didn't know it was free!) and found the battery cover :blast - don't laugh, the release catch was so stiff it wasn't releasing the cover so before I saw the manual I wasn't sure that it even had a removable battery! So now I have access to the mini USB - all I need is a data cable... and a power cable... and lifetime maps (no, it wasn't worth it previously as the Streetpilot went out of support) so I guess this is going to get a bit more expensive.

Fancy that!

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

It may already have a subscription to the maps . Download garmin express plug in the nav and try it you may be lucky, it should tell you what updates are available and if you need to pay for the maps, and while you are at it you can download basecamp and install it and then mapsource, do it in that order.

Nav IV update

Just to put a happy ending on this thread! :-

I bought a cable from Amazon for six quid and down-loaded Garmin Express which my Windows 10 based PC didn't seem to be able to handle, so I reverted to an old Vista run laptop and plugged in the Nav IV - result!:clap

It was quite happy to let me register the device to my account and let me update the mapping. My only problem is that it said in order to load all the European Maps I needed to put a micro SD card into it as the maps are now too big for the device's inbuilt storage . As I don't have a spare one knocking around I've just updated the North Western European Region map for the time being.

So, thanks to leedude03, redrick and iand46 for their posts. :thumb2 Now I just need a RAM mount and power cable so I can fit it on my GSA when its not on the K1600.

So it already had the lifetime maps then, a good result if so, an sd card is as cheap as chips get one and load the full mapping on it and what ever else you want , maybe a little music or an audio book. Anyway glad its all sorted.

Just as a side note you could have downloaded the complete mapset to your pc, and then installed what sections you wanted to the nav, and still have had the full mapping available on the pc for when you got your sd card.
