Nav V vs Nav IV Map Coverages

Hi there - I have been using my trusty Nav IV with Mapsource and the City Navigator Europe NT map coverages for years. I have been given a Nav V and have actually bought a Nav VI and I am confused about whether they use different map coverages or the same ? Garmin Express is telling me the IV is up to date with 2024.10 Europe but the Nav V is due an update to 2025.10 but it is saying City Navigator UK & Ireland. Ideally I want to use all of them with full European coverage but are the map coverages different and therefore will I need to download them to the devices and my PC separately or will they interfere with each other ?

Is it possible that the Nav V only has a partial map installed? My old NAV IV has this. No Idea why a NAV V would only have GB&I maps.


And no the maps won't interfere with each other on Basecamp


But if you create a route on a map that is not in your device the device will ask to recalculate the route on its map set.

Is it possible to select a map region and ping this across to the V and VI as a supplementary map set, like you can with the Nav IV in Mapsource?

The Nav 5 is perfectly capable of holding the full Euro map, you need to insert a micro SD card format to fat 32, the maps will then thereafter be stored on the card.

Yip install the maps to your computer. You are given the option to do this inGarmin express. Connect your device to to the computer and go to maps> install maps then you can select the tiles that cover the areas you want to navigate. You get a line at the bottom of the screen that shows if you are going to exceed the capacity of the units storage. Just like using an old Streetpilot 2610 and a 256MB CF card

I managed to do that fine - your advice was better than Garmin's for sure ! I wonder if the Nav V and VI will work with Mapsource or will I finally need to learn to use the dreaded Basecamp

I think that they can both still be used with Mapsource but while basecamp has a bit of a learning curve its a better piece of software in my opinion. Couple of good places to get guidance.

You are probably right What are the major differences ? Can you use route/track/coverage files from Mapsource in Basecamp or do you have to do everything again ?

The Mapsource files will work fine in Basecamp though the file extensions for Mapsource files is .gdb which was a Garmin modified version of .gpx and not compatable with other mapping devices and software. If you bring your old mapsource routes into basecamp it will read them perfectly and enable them to be re-exported as required as GPX files which are compatable with the rest of the mapping world.
