Navigator V - Review

I downloaded the Traffic App on my iPhone which bluetooths to the Nav V but when I hit the traffic button I just get a different type of map but just a map all the same. I was expecting to see lots of red triangles or something for traffic build up but it didn't appear to show anything indicating hold ups. Am I doing something wrong?

From the manual....

Cheers Gnasher. I'll give it a go tomorrow although from memory I can't recall a panel coming up on the right hand side after you press traffic - just a different map. Anyway I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks anyway.

I'm sure Richard will have posted this so apologies in advance, but whilst fannying around with the nav V today I noticed that if I go into 'Categories' the unit appears to remember if I have been/searched somewhere recently that falls within the category I have chosen.

For example: I chose 'Where to', 'Categories', 'Transportation' & on the RHS of the screen it showed 'Grindleford' as an option. I can only conclude that this is because I searched 'Grindleford railway station' a couple of weeks ago and the unit had remebered it.

Rather useful I thought. Even though I didn't want to go back there this time. It also remembered Eurotunnel & East Midlands Airport & offered those as suggestions.

Does anyone know why my computer Desktop Mac kicks out my Navigator 5 please?

Connect it to the computer, using Garmin Express, the Mac recognises it and starts updating. After a few minutes it disconnects itself, comes up with the warnings for the Nav 5 and Nav 5 card were not ejected properly

Now left with no maps on the Nav 5 :blast

Long live the Quest ;)

As usual start by removing & reinstalling Garmin Express & see what that brings.

Mmmmmm Ta

Did that ... no change.

Did it again, deleting the device, Nav 5 switched off removed the battery and the SD Micro card, reinstalled everything leaving the card out ... no change.

After a few seconds, couple of minutes the Nav 5 is 'ejected'

:beerjug:

Several attempts made during this afternoon :blast

Navigator 5 'Not ejected properly' wishing now I'd left well alone, after all the bloody roads I want to ride on have been around four hundred years :rob

Don't know what's wrong but you could do a bit more to isolate the problem. Just connect the NAV5 and don't run GE (Quit out of it completely). If the NAV5 Ejects we've eliminated GE as the issue. Now it's down to your Mac or the NAV5. If you have not done so back up your data and then do a Master Reset on the NAV5 (Power Off, Power On and when you see the BMW Motorrad logo, press and hold the lower righthand corner of the display. Wait for the question and select YES.

Connect to your Mac without GE running and see if it stays mounted.

So far so crap ...

Sometimes the Mac will pick up the Nav 5, sometimes it won't. When it does it will eject it within seconds or minutes, so it's not Garmin Express that's the problem ... well not yet, anyway

Back to the drawing board ... out with the Quest :D

:beerjug:

Micky,

Have you contacted Garmin or where you bought it from. You need to swap the unit.

Cheers Titto :thumb

Removed Garmin Express from my Mac, connected my Nav 5 ... took ages to show on the desktop as another HD, but within seconds or minutes it was ejected, with the warning 'Disk not ejected properly' ... so it's not a conflict with Garmin Express.

On another Mac the Nav 5 didn't even present itself on the desktop ... not recognised?

Spent forty feckin minutes listnin' to Garmin's music t'other day, all to no avail, the handset batteries went flat before they answered

Raised an email enquiry with them, guaranteed answer in three days .... nope

You're right .... back to the dealer now, pissed off, fed up and fucked off

It's still a wonderful world out there though

For what its worth, i had a similar problem with a zumo 660 on my mac and it was the pesky cable that was at fault. I have several leads all exactly the same and all work fine for their intended use. BUT, they dont all work when connecting the satnav. My Macbook did the same thing, it would show the drive and then disappear before you could click on it....

Many thanks :thumb

Got my maps back on my Nav-5 .... by using Rainbow's PC (their cable) and Garmin Express.

Spent 45 minutes on the phone to Garmin before the batteries of my house phone went flat .... nice music though :nenau

Raised an email to them whereby they guarantee a reply within three days ... good job I'm not holding my breath, still no reply after almost a week grrrrrrrr!!

Sounds like the Garmin USB lead is to blame if thats what your using (thats assuming your using one of the main USB sockets on your Mac & not a USB hub or an extension lead)

Some USB info........http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6053

Mmmmm only using the cable that came with the Nav-5 but have tried a USB port on the back of the Mac rather than a hub I have attached. Thanks for the heads up with the USB info ... will have a look later ... ta :thumb

Try removing the hub from the Mac before connecting the Nav V. If you have any USB 1 Devices connected first the Nav V will not receive the USB 2 connection it needs (all devices connected or "daisy-chained)

Ah .... didn't know that. Got a USB hub to which the old scanner & printer are attached permanently, they'll be USB 1 I guess, 'cos they're old.

I have a mission for this evening :thumb

Wanna borrow my cable? See if that helps?

Many thanks for the kind offer ... UKGSer at its best :thumb

Will try the above this evening, but can always 'borrow' a cable from Rainbow :thumb

:beerjug:

No worries. If push come to shove & you need to use a Nav V & yours is u/s or being fixed give me a shout.
