Navigator V - Review

You're most welcome. I had the same problem with mine when it first booted up.

No, Emoto's reading it right.

My map was zoomed out but not to the full extent by any means and the map was scrolling nicely.

Pardon my inquisitiveness, but this means that you could not cause your little self icon to drive off the screen, correct?

Correct.

I'm hoping to head put on the bike today for a wee trip. I'll see if I can make it fall off the screen by zooming in a bit.
Last time I was out I had a route planned so the icon was, naturally, moving along as I was. I decided to go somewhere slightly different so 'cancelled routing'. The map stayed on the screen & the icon still moved along the road as I did. Today I know where I'm going so won't 'plan a route' but just put the map up & see what difference that makes, if any. :nenau

OK, I'm getting a bit confused as to what map view we were originally discussing as being a "moving-map".

These map screens are moving-maps:
  1. Open View Map--if there is a Dashboard you have a moving-map
    UhiCidKQ_Y92dRh8x_xXyPOShmEymm_3ztON1rRXmDI=w400-h240-p-no

  2. Navigate a Trip on the map.
    pMX9WXZERGz7g7_PAvZ5b04KD_gQSuheQyxw0LCQh5A=w400-h240-p-no

These map screens are not moving-maps:
  1. Map without Dashboard
    b1PkGroj5Ovd40ILdjlDpcN4041e-rs9ebhNL89zWQ8=w400-h240-p-no

  2. Weather Radar
    FSyd2kKx1jyl6AR6pvoioqaZNLgZfZzK879GdxsVAgU=w400-h240-p-no

I thought what we were discussing was a Map view that didn't have a Dashboard but was a moving-map(?).

Well this is bloody embarrassing (spelling?).

I went out on the bike & started with No Route planned & on full zoom. Sure enough the map & icon stood still & weren't scrolling.
So I stopped & planned a route into Lincoln. Naturally the icon moved & scrolling started again. So I 'Stopped' the routing via the button on my map screen &, Bob's Your Uncle, the scrolling started again. :thumb2.
On the plus side Zooming right in & right out made no difference at all, the scrolling continued BUT this only happened with the 'dashboard' on the screen. As soon as I went into Full Map mode the scrolling stopped again but a swift return to 'Dashboard' screen saw the scrolling return.

I'm convinced that it was scrolling on full map screen last time I used it so will have another play next time I'm out & about.

Edit: DRTBYK seems to have covered my thoughts above. :bow

Edit 2. I do feel I should apologise to everyone for clouding the issue, particularly based on DRTBYKs post above. :surrender

No, no! No apologies necessary! We're all trying to figure out this new beast, and I am looking forward to everything that we can collectively figure out about it. So, please keep your eyes peeled and try everything out because you may find more undocumented features and we will all be richer for that. :beerjug:

OK ... OK ... who stole them :blast

Turned the Nav V on and the 'favourites' have gone AWOL again :blast

Go to 'Where To' and they're all in there, but on the normal mapping zilch, zero, all gone, not showing, AWOL :nenau

As per post 114

Ain't even had the feckin' thing plugged in to a computer, but my favourites, as I roll around the map, quite simply, ain't there again

I s'pose, in the eternal plan of things, it won't be a problem. Maybe it's a bonus, they won't clutter my screen up :D Out on the road, go to favourites, and anything near will show up ...

:beerjug:

I have a vague recollection that you can chose which and what of your Favourites you want to have displayed on your map, or was it that the Favourites only appear when you are riding a pre-set route?

Can't remember. Ignore if bollox, which it probably is. I shan't be offended.

So what's happening here .... I did a Master Reset and my favourites were then shown on my map. Not using a route, but scroll around and my saved locations were shown on the map.

Haven't had the Nav V plugged in to the computer, but when I switched it on they've gone again  They are all in my saved locations 'Go to' select one and it shows on the map ....

Marked a location while scrolling round the screen, for future use (The Galloway Arms on the A75 at Crocketford), named it, gave it a symbol, saved it .... it's now in 'my favourites' and will show if I select it ....

.... BUT it doesn't show on the Navigator V screen at all, unless I have selected it in my locations :nenau

:beerjug:

But .... I haven't ridden/driven a pre set route with the Nav V yet, just ain't had the chance, so it could be like what Wappers says ;)

It's called a "bug" or fault in the software to hold the Map Layers setting "Places along the road."

Hopefully Garmin will provide a fix for this but EVERYONE should report it when they see it.

By the way, Micky, when mine does this (doesn't show my waypoints) they sometimes come back when I moving.

Thanks Dan :thumb
Hope to be using it, on the road, in the near future. Will report back in due course .... glad it's not only me ;)

Talking with Garmin it seems that the POIs and Places (Favorites, Waypoints) are only visible when moving faster than 2mph. Which is the same speed required to record the Trip (Track) Log. It does seem though that Places and POIs stay visible for a short period after your stop moving.

I don't know how they expect someone to do Trip Planning when you can't see POIs and your waypoints--which I felt obligated to share with them.

I s'pose in the eternal plan of things it doesn't really matter?

You're either on a route, or otherwise riding round, you don't really need your favourites showing, cluttering up the screen. At any time, if you think you're in an area where you might have marked somewhere to eat, for instance, just a couple of clicks will show all your favourite in the vicinity anyway?

So I have had my Nav 5 since just before xmas. But to-day was the real first real day I took it out on a good ride-out route, testing most functions. All works very well,
very well ..in fact quite impressed. I did very much like the:
Searching along active route. for a petrol station..very neat indeed.
Searching to my destination, this seems to bring up nearest petrol station to you that
might be slightly off route , in my example it was 1.5 miles off east. You select it, I choose to
add it to my active route. Off you go , get petrol it brings you back onto the active route at the earliest point, or simply back-tracks you to the exit you took from the active route.

You can select which way/destination point to start your active route from. Initially I did not get this function, but I do now. I t allows you flexibility on how you want to start or join your route.

Yes I quite like this Nav 5
O'h and lovin those 'hearts' for my waypoints, ain't changing that .

Has anyone linked the V with the Autocom 1273 Bluetooth module ? Currently linking to my TomTom Rider but new V on the way shortly.....depending on the answer to this question !

The Autocom 1273 BT dongle is, ISTR, basic Bluetooth 1.0, mono audio. I would think that the Nav V will connect OK but the audio won't give the best audio quality for music. Will be sufficient for directions though. Probably best to upgrade to one of the more recent A2DP dongles if you're going to be making use of the media player.

Thanks Bumpkin. I was hoping to use the media player. I've got an Autocom 300 Super pro Avi so will check for A2DP dongles that fit.....unless anyone has that info to hand ?

I've gone for the BMW interest free option for the Nav5, ordering a car kit (£85) and the Nav5 with cradle (to go on my 2010 GSA - possible 2014 GSA in April time). Takes the bad taste (partly) out of the mouth paying for it over 12months !
