Hi guys,

Finally picked up my new 1250GS TE Exclusive last week and I've put 400 miles on it so far. Loving it! However got a few questions that I'm hoping you guys can help with...

  • I feel like I'm stretching a bit to reach the bars, like they could do with coming closer to me. This might be because i'm used to sports bikes. Anything I can do to help this? Don't think I want them any higher which risers do? I did get a little bit of upper back ache the last time out. I have my seat low at the front and high at the back to stop me sliding back.
  • The screen seems pretty rubbish. When set low the wind is on my chest, when set high on my lid. What do i need to do to fix this? Don't think I want a bigger screen as i don't like looking through it or having the top of it in my eye line. I'm only 5ft 10' so didn't think this would be an issue?
  • The bars seem a bit vibey. Do those foam cover you put round the grips help?
  • Removed the battery to fit my trickle charger, and now fitting the outer black plastic triangle shaped cover back to the bike, it keep popping out of the grommet that holds it in the upper right hand corner? What I'm I doing wrong? If i don't fully tighten the screw it's all fine, but when its tight up, it pops out?
  • Reading the instruction book, it talks about the wonder wheel being able to control the volume of the the headset (Sena 10R), but this doesn't seem to do anything when i move it up and down?
  • Also, why is the sound (nav directions) from the Nav 6 unit sound so crackly and poor? It's all connected up as it should be following that good youtube video. Working great. The media, phone, nav (app based) from TFT all sound nice and clear but the nav 6 sounds crappy.

Cheers guys!

Look at Wunderlich up and back risers to ease your upper back pain. You can get Chinese ones off ebay for around £20. Many folk on here have those and they are fine. Give then a try.
Have a look at a MRA screen (see The Missenden Flyer to have a look at size and fitting). These disturb the airflow and stop buffeting. The MRA plastic is pretty tough also.
Foam might help, so might heavier bar ends. See if you can put up with it?
Is the battery fully pushed back in? Covers are usually very well fitted with no problems refitting.
The volume is only adjusted on BMW's own headset with their own helmets.
Is the nav set as a Mobile Phone device? to get A2D2 (ish, can't remember the stereo code thing.....)

Perfect, thanks!

Will check out the bar risers, seems like just what i need.

On the screen I take it the MRA is a big thing and you end up looking through it rather than over it?

Yer the bar vibe is not that bad, i'll see if i can put up with it for the time being. Just want total comfort!

Yes battery fully back to home, and the inner cover on nicely. Its just the outer cover that's popping off (the one you see when looking at the bike).

That makes sense on the volume, thanks for clearing that up.

Humm good point, think it's set up as second mobile phone like that youtube video says, Would that make a difference?

Thanks again!

Re side panels, it’s easy to push out one of the rubber grommets partially or fully when refitting the panel which stops it sitting flush. That happened to me

Yeah, the DEALER service tech did that to mine. I took the LH panel off for the first time recently and found the lower grommet was missing. Grrr.

Humm I see, maybe I've dislodged a grommet? What do they look like? Any one got a pic of what its meant to look like with the grommets installed correctly?

Cant remember anything falling off, I'll look in my garage tonight!

Rox Risers work better than fixed risers for many as you can fit them to your shape. Had them on my 1200 for 15k and made it 1000 mile day comfortable. Decided not to use them on the 1250 as it won’t be used in the same way.
Can’t help on screen as I’m smaller than you are.
Wonder wheel only works on BMW’s own headset.

I use bar risers and grip puppy bar grips for better ergo & comfort. Also replaced my standard GSA screen with the MRA vario screen (as per Missenden flier's video). It's not quite high enough imho but you have the option of lowering it and using the top part of the screen to create a more laminar airflow onto your helmet which results in less buffeting (as with turbulence). Still quite noisy so I use earplugs for longer trips. A standard GSA screen with one of these fitted also does an excellent job: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSA...994376?hash=item2ab6b5cd88:g:dykAAOSwGV9bnPje

Had one on my Triumph Explorer and imho it worked better than the MRA vario screen. Should have kept it for the GSA!

Hi

Try Grip Puppies (not Grip Buddies). £10 and work well.
Wunderlich up/back risers fit and are about £80. You can also twist the bars slightly towards you.
At 5ft 10, you may find a smaller screen better rather than larger or bolt on bits. The BMW OEM 'rallye' screen generates 'clean' air and takes the weight of the wind off at speed. The 'downside' is that it generates more wind noise. If you have a decent helmet and good ear plugs, this is probably the way to go.
The plastic battery cover thing is fiddly to get back on and rubber grommets tend to fall off in that area. :-(

To improve the reach try rotating the bars back towards you.

Regarding battery cover:

Make sure the peg on the lower left of the battery cover is located in its hole before carefully pressing in the top right peg. Both have rubber grommets which are ridiculously easy to dislodge and lose - so check that they are still in place as the cover will rattle and not be secure without them. Some people suggest a little vaseline or similar on the pegs so they are less likely to push out the grommets, and I have also seen it suggested to superglue the grommets in place.

I used the Chinese back and up risers which were fine, but check that the brake and clutch lines are not stretching on full lock. You can either re-route them outside the stanchions, or I found that just moving the mirror mount and brake/clutch reservoir assemblies slightly inboard will provide just enough extra slack.

Just bought 4 of those pesky grommets always losing them, not cheap I tell you. :rob

I found that in a pinch normal circular electrical wiring type grommets of the right size will fit - they are circular not oblong as the OEM ones but will deform to fit.

Right guys just been out and looked again. Seems I have everything in place? Whats going on? Pictures show all grommets in place?

Something must be misaligned. If you put the bottom foot in first with the cover leaned away from the bike at the the top you will be able to see down behind the cover and check that it goes into the grommet and doesn't miss. Then tilt the cover back towards the bike while peering into the gap at the top to make sure the other peg locates properly, and gently press it into place. You should now find that the screw hole lines up and is in contact with the bike.

If this doesn't work then something is obstructing it. Have you had the battery out by any chance? This is very tricky to get back fully into place, and if you don't it will be protruding more than it should and will make cover replacement impossible.

I’m 5ft 6ins and have no probs with the bars as they are. Sometimes it’s just a matter of relaxing, particularly with a new bike. On vibes I also have no problems and find those padded things are sh1t as you lose too much feel. It’s a motorbike ffs, they all vibe to some degree.

If I were you I would persevere with the bike in standard set up as the bike needs about 1500 miles from new to bed in. Mine felt better every time I got on it. Now with a couple of k clocked up it is lovely, the gears drop in much sweeter when clutchless changes are made.

I’ve had MRA screens on previous gs bikes, and also on my XR. They are definitely better that standard, but I’m getting a bit bored with farkles and more of the f**k it, let’s just ride it opinion these days.

IIRC as above you need to locate the bottom one 1st, then the top front one and the one with the bolt last. Put some lubrication on the grommets to help the lugs locate, either a dab of copper grease or a squirt of wd40 depending on what you've got
