Well here she is. my new airhead project....quick drum roll before unveiling her...

And here she is. What a beauty? 1983 frame with log book bought off Ebay for £28 :)

A few parts from my secret stash, a wipe with an oily rag and she'll be as good as new. I think it's got a fine patina about it

I haven't decided on the engine yet. I've got a choice. A later bottom end from one of Tarkas contraptions..Notice the early 70's kickstart gearbox bought for £20 :eyebrow

Or a 210,000 mile heavy flywheel R100 engine. I've just rebuilt the gearbox, the heads need new exhaust guides and a full set of valves but apart from that it's a cracking motor.

Obviously the heavy flywheels favourite because the parts are all there.

Watch this space :beerjug:

My twopennorth

Heavy Flywheel bottom end without a doubt :thumb2
I've never heard of Studs pulling out of early Crankcases !!
But if you have a set of 800 barrels and pistons, put them on and you won't twist frame out of shape on acceleration :augie
Although twin shock frames arn't as prone to that as monolever g/s's

If you had have asked Rob you could have had the frame with log book from the R100R you had the tank and other bits off :blast

Ahh! but would it have been £28 Gary?

A bit of a serious note here though. Because I don't know the history of the frame I'm going to HPi before I do any work on it. If it has any dodgy history or shows any signs of damage I'll bin it and will be in touch Gary :thumb2

This has all the makings for a great thread :thumb2

Rob, do you intend to keep the rebuilt bike looking fairly standard or is your plan for something a bit more radical?

The bikes going to be a road bike. I fancy a nice clean usable roadster using the huge amount of bits I've got laying about.

If anybody fancies some input then just chip in. I haven't really got any fixed ideas at this stage and I'm open to suggestions :beerjug:

Okay Here's a question for yous

What about a K100 front end in an airhead?

Same head bearings, etc etc etc Approx the same distance lower bridge to the wheel s

I bought an ex plod R100 accy damaged and was trying to rebuild on a budget

I have 2 good K100's and one complete for spares with an engine that's full of water for some reason (or else electric monk would have had the engine.)

Anyway H'mm GarryH a pity you're not closer or I'd have take the R100R frame only I'd probably be building a sort of a mish~mash but at least it'd be used :aidan:aidan:aidan

Any thoughts on K100 front end Rob?

Bargin

Did that price included the rust?, good buy engine just nicely run in should go well, now get out there and get it going.

Just had a half hour session with the wire brush. The frame looks a lot worse than it is. Theres a small amount of light corrosion on the top of the bottom tube - no rot though. This is the worst bit . I could emery it out but it's so shallow it won't even show once it's coated.

The down tubes looked pretty bad on the photos, they strangely look much better in real life, and came up ok with a wire brush. I'm happy enough with the frame so it's off for blasting and powder coating the first chance I get -

I thought the K100 front end was the same as the one fitted to the monoshock R80/100 Jay. I don't know though. I'd say it's a lot better than the front end on the twinshock and G/s bikes.

I have an R100 frame and some K75 forks if anyone else wants a similar 'white elephant' £50 throw in the R1100s engine (£100) and you have the start of a real project.

I also have some R80Gs handlebars, an R80 police single seat, a Saab turbocharger, some heated grips, an Olive tree in a pot and a spare copy of Zen and the Art etc.

was the Olive tree a Wonderlust or torchertech product:augie

I got a R80rt mono 1988 frame and rear subframe I got logbook but I informed Dvla of scrapping if anybody wants it its theirs, before it gets binned.Or if you want a butchered bit I got a Stihl saw and would be happy to oblige.

Was thinking maybe Rob could build me a bike outa that frame and a few of his bits:augie
I just love the old airheads but don't no enough about them to chance getting one. :( Mind i do still have the 90s to get going this year, but not the same as a GS is it....
