Hi all, i am new here, you dont have to be gentle tho!!! Have just picked up my F650 GS 2001 model and have riden it back to France where we live. The bike is great, but on changing into 2nd gear, once i have started to accelarate, it seems as if the clutch slips a little then reengages, shooting the bike forward a bit, then is fine. It doesnt do this in any other gear, only 2nd. Any ideas anyone?

First check you have a bit of free play on the clutch cable, failing that the clutch plates are worn out and the springs may also need replacing.

Probably only doing it in 2nd gear when there's a lot of torque.

Loads of info here

Welcome to the forum Suzy.

Good luck getting the bike sorted, Chamonix isn't the best location for a slipping clutch!

I've just been reading about clutch slippage on F650GSs caused by using synthetic oil.

It seems there's quite a few reasons for not using synthetic oil in many bikes, it may be the cause of your problem.

Thanks for info. We are going to try a new clutch and springs and give it an oil change. Fingers crossed its not something in the gear box.

Welcome, Suzy!

I would highly recommend the f650.com site. That's where I spend a lot of my time. Granted, I don't ride the f anymore (well, only occasionally while I try to sell it), but they are a great group of people and there is tonnes and tonnes of information there in the faq's and in the forum itself. If you find the information useful, consider becoming a member, too!

every time my F650 has had an oil change there is a bit of clutch slip.Give it a few more miles and see if it settles down.

Check your clutch cable for ease of movement. Early 650s were prone to your symptoms as the cable can snag at the engine mount area (clean your nipple :augie). Later models had slightly different routing/mount.
