New engine needed.

And they call this progress..... modern business practises leave me cold. Yes, good old BMW replace your engine when it fails to deliver what you shelled out a not inconsiderable sum of money for, but my take on it is that it shouldn't need replacing in the first place. The older bikes didn't have all these woes when they were new and most still don't decades later. :blast

I think I am now leaning towards getting the engine shipped here. ( safer option)
The seller assured me it is now pelleted and ready for shipping and I have had a quote of £63 from a pallet company for delivery.

If it's gumtree, how is paypal involved?

Did the seller use the old paypal escrow or paypal as an intermiderary to hold payment on your behalf .. if so it's a scam
 
Personally I wouldn't buy anything over £100 on a Ebay or Gumtree advert, without seeing it
If I was spending £1000 on a used engine it would be from Motorworks or Sherlocks
Alternatively I would have hired a van and took a mate and travelled up to Ayr to collect and paid cash
I really don't understand this mentality of letting a courier company collect a bike or engine I haven seen, as ' I am too busy to collect' scenario
I have traveled all over uk to buy bikes in my van before
When buying used - interviewing the seller is more revealing, than looking over the bike - lots now have no clue about how to look after and maintain a bike and bolting on a few trinkets isn't maintenance.

I have decided however to get the engine shipped to me here in Staffs and get it done here.
I have a mechanic in mind but he is very busy!
Will keep looking. I will do the donkey work myself and see how far I get if he stays too busy.

Get the engine first, asses it's condition, then see what can be done


If the engine is pukka, then i'll eat my hat & buy you a pint, when you bring it to Dent ;)

Let’s hope it is Pukka and I can then ride it to ‘Dent’ wherever that is so I can watch you eating a hat lunch while I drink a free pint.. :beer:
 
Hi mate, I have a 65 plate GSA that had the first Newer engine transplant through NOG (think it was E3-E4?) any way BMW took a week to do the engine! I got my bike back! Problem was that the starting motor on the newer engine is different so it was leaking oil everywhere, took BMW 6 weeks to get a new staring motor as if they took one off the line it meant a knock on that someone wasn’t getting a new bike.

Bottom line is if you get the newer engine u will need the newer starting motor! The above stopped engine transplants for about 2 months until mother ship could supply starting motors!

Thanks for the offer but the engine has finally been put on a pallet wagon and is somewhere between Ayr and here. Hope to get it delivered Monday or Tuesday.
I have started a new thread ‘Engine Swap’ to show progress to date. :thumby:

Just as an aside. Many many years ago, before computeristaion I bought a BSA C15 cafe racer which was an abandoned project. The frame and engine came from different sources. They wanted to know the registration numbers of both vehicles from which the parts had come.
Don't know if that is still the case. Certainly the frame number is the most important component when it comes to registering. They may want sight of a receipt for the engine. It is certainly easier to check that the engine is kosher with computer data bases now.
It was just a thought and I may be wrong. But the engine number should be changed on the registration document when it is all buttoned up.

. written confirmation on headed paper from a garage (if the change took place before you bought the vehicle)
 
Yes. Got all that in hand, for engine number change.
Also changing the 2 painted panels from the dull blue to metallic black (Bmw colour, forgot the name) so will need to inform them of change of colour too.
 
when i started biking again after a 42 yr gap i bought a f800s from bmw dealer. after a while i found out there was no engine number. after some investigation i managed to contact the previous owner who said a new engine had been fitted under warranty.

Well I Swapped crank cases on my 1967 Triumph and just told the DVLA the new engine no. They updated the V5. No other paperwork required. Maybe because it was a historic vehicle?
