NEW ENGINE!

Hello there, I am new to the site and a little disturbed with regards to the engine corrosion issues. Please advise me without taking the p+++.
I have just bought a gs 1200 te '63' plate with 2k on clock and it is a minter. This bike was a private sale from someone who has cherished it and there are no signs of the dreaded yet.
Is this one of the bike likely to effected?.
I have been handed transferable bmw warranty paperwork valid until May 2018 that I need to send to BMW as the new owner. UNtil now I have always been a fair wether man but intend to ride every season from now on but concerned about what has been said on here.
Do you advise any protection for the engine?, is acf 50 the way forward or do I just leave it alone and make a claim before the end of the warranty period.
As the bike is 3 years old now will it be too late to make a claim or will my warranty cover do and cover me through to 2018 for corrosion.
As I say I am new to this site, may sound a bit thick but this is my first ever BMW, so keen to have one yet stuff on here is very concerning.
Thankyou in advance for advice. Regards Dave

Don't worry too much about what you read on forums, as they have a tendency to focus on the negative. Obviously not all bikes will be affected, far from it.

As to riding all year round, I've never used ACF50 on any of my LC GS's and haven't had corrosion on any of them. I ride all year round, and if there is salt on the road, I apply a liberal coating of FS365 before EVERY ride, then rinse the bike off with cold water when I get home.

It's only the original new purchase warranty that covers corrosion, the extendable one does not.

You just need to be anal with your cleaning process and buy a blower to dry it off properly.

I really wouldn't worry I've had a 13 plate from new, ridden it to Morocco, Iceland And all over Europe. It gets washed occasionally never ACF50 or anything, ridden occasionally in winter, (admittedly not every day) and it's absolutely fine. Obviously some people do have issues but it's not everyone.

There's a pattern with acf50 treated bikes and those that don't use it.:augie

I treat my bikes exactly the same as Nutty and I'm now on my 5th LC and not one of them has had any corrosion issues at all, they have stayed looking pretty much like new at trade-in time.

What I will say is beware the dreaded washing up liquid, most contain salts to aid cleaning the dishes which can cause havoc with unprotected aluminum such as where the engine joints have been machined.

Only use Car or bike shampoo on the shiny bits!

I have done 7000 miles, so far so good and I don't expect any, if Im unlucky enough Im confident BMW will step up to the mark as per the OP experience.

I do pretty much the same and only had slight paint issues on the rear drive one of my 4 1200GS's and I ride all year round and do about 1,000 miles a month in average.

My bike is in getting a new engine as I type. It's a goodwill gesture by BMW because it's out of corrosion warranty so I have to pay installation and 600 mile service. Anyone know how much the 600 service would be?

They will only be changing the oil & filter so supply your own oil (£40 ish) let the dealer supply the oil filter (£10?) and bank on 30 mins worth of labour :clap

Me again. I have spoken to Balderstons BMW today in Peterborough and spoken with the service guy there. He is aware there have been recalls to do with the corrosion on engines etc.
He recommends (personally) to use acf 50 to look after the bike as you could and maybe should with any motorcycle. He from experience recommends that the bike is washed with just water and no detergents to wash off the protected layer. If any solvent cleaner is used the spray with acf again.
I know from a previous 2010 yam xt660x with 420 miles on the clock at 6 years old what the elements can do and this just sat in a garage so I am going to accept the advice and empty a can full on it next week on delivery.
One further thing I have learned today following some digging is that my 2013 bike cannot have a gear assist pro fitted which I am really gutted about. MY bike was built two weeks too early to have this extra fitted now. It is the liquid cooled bike but it depends on the build date. A second BMW dealer in Northampton also confirmed this.
Other than the nav v this was one further thing I really wanted to have on mine. Thanks all for the comments, I am aware the transferable warranty will not cover the rot issue but still will be a good warranty otherwise. Cheers Dave

I would also suggest once you have ACF 50'd it you then cover it with Bilt Hamber Dynax UC, especially if you are going to use it all year round.

My experience is its best to use them the other way round. UC first then acf. The acf appears to stop the UC bonding properly.

That was the deal I was offered in similar circumstances, eventually got installation & 600 mile service done for £450. Arguably we should pay nothing, especially as I am first owner & returned to supplying dealer. But life's too short, I can always get more money, I can't get more time.

I thought it was a good deal as I bought the bike second hand from the dealer at a very good price and it was out of corrosion warranty.

Got my bike yesterday after having a new engine and swingarm. They picked it up and delivered it foc in a van because I've broken my ribs. Great service and the bike looks like it's brand new! Can't wait to ride it! Anyone know what they put on the black plastic bits to make them look new again?

ACF50 will bring the plastic back to life, just don't use it on contact surfaces I.e. Seat and grips

UPDATE!!!!!

Got my new engine Tuesday? It's back in for an oil leak!!

When they fitted the new engine they used my old starting motor! Well there is a 5mm gap and it's leaking oil! Turns our it must be the new engine as it's now going to take 3-4 weeks to get a new starting motor or whatever they need to sort in!

Anyone else had this?

Oh now have an 1200rs to play with!

Nearly ....... My GSA was due in for a replacement engine on the 12th but was cancelled due to lack of engines

It was rescheduled for tomorrow but yesterday I had a call from NOG explaining that two of the engines they had recently replaced had sprung an oil leak between the starter motor and crankcase. It would appear that BMW have altered the design of the crankcases so the original starter motors (that they swap over from the old engine) are not seating correctly and subsequently leaking engine oil. My replacement engine will now not happen until the new starter motors arrive in Berlin which apparently is the 5th Oct with delivery to the UK a week later

It's a bit frustrating as I had set aside a couple of days at the end of this week to get the motor run in and hopefully serviced on the Saturday, but never mind. These things happen :augie

PS on a more positive note I'm assuming that as the crankcases have been modified then these replacement engines must be to the latest 2017my spec (whatever that is) :nenau:D

I am also assuming it's the new engine! They said today that it's the starting motor mount that needs to be replace and I won't have a bike for a bit, also quoted 5 oct for parts! What's NOG?

Engine is way better, pity about the leak!
