NEW ENGINE!

I was told that initially when the problem of the engine finish appeared that the motors were returned to BMW for investigation of the finish, now I know that bodywork etc is allegedly smashed up and skipped so I would assume that all the defective engines will suffer one of these two fates .

Unless of course they are repainted and put into other peoples bikes to replace their engines that have suffered corrosion issues ..................... NOW THAT WOULD BE A SCANDAL !!!!!!!!

UPDATE!!
Had a phone call today and BMW have agreed to replace the bevel drive and swing arm, so that means I don't have to pay for the bevel oil change! basically at 6k/2yrs its gonna get a health check and the book stamped. The tyres need replacing, not due to corrosion but at 6k are worn out!! they don't have anakees in stock but have Tourances so I have gone with them £180 fitted. Still on course to get it back Saturday! I think im going to call it triggers broom haha. hopefully it will still have the same number on the back!!

The new engine will have a different one to the old, so you will need to jot the number of your new engine down on the V5 and send it off to DVLA.

I wonder if Triumph would have been so generous. You going to have a brand new bike, almost, will it need a 600 mile service /
some people had corrosion issues on the tiger 800 and casings were done according to the tiger forum. However mine did NOT suffer any corrosion over the five years of ownership.
So is it better to have excellent customer service but a bike with multiple new parts OR a bike that only visits the dealer for a service!!

Just playing devils advocate you know.
AND yes I get a free 600 mile service

Me to on the devil thingy, another mate has a Tiger and it's not a nicely built bit of kit with poor quality finish and ancills. But having personally used the BMW warranty on a previous bike within the warranty period and again after without quibble I have been very pleased with the customer service.

To me the loss of the bike and extra trips to the dealer would be a pain as its my main form of transport and the dealer is 50 miles away so can cause issues not being at work.

Enjoy your extra shiny new bits.

Steve

They take them out the back and smash them up unless BMW specifically request the return of a particular unit.
What a waste!

Well, if that actually happens, wouldn't it be nice if you could keep bits like the Rocker covers, and perhaps the front cover, in case the front cover goes "furry" or you have a mishap and scrape a rocker cover for example....
Just a thought ...

I'd actually like the engine to pull in bits and see how it all works :D

Took the GS LC to Bahnstormers this morning for its 2nd year service and a NEW ENGINE !
still it will save me the cost of the Oil and Filter lol. Missing the bike already as the weather here in southern England is glorious! Hopefully the bike can be collected next Saturday, however spotted more white spots on swing arm and final drive so it looks like those need to be replaced as well. The service adviser said that they might get clearance to replace them whilst its in, But might not be ready for Saturday boo hoo.
Also I think I will be getting another silver engine not a black one so hopefully I can stop this one corroding.
So here is to day1 of no bike week.

HOORAY I HAVE IT BACK!
rode home from dealer which is about 18 miles, the bike feels soo different and I know that it is down to the tyres. BUT the gearbox is smoother as is the clutch it goes into first nice I can find neutral easy. the tyres are quiet hope that lasts.
have resisted the temptation to ride it as I wanted to apply the Bilt Hamber Dynax uc wax over the new parts. So this morning I spent about 3 hrs coating the engine, swing arm and bevel drive with it. 24~96 hrs is the drying time so I hope its worth it.
The bike has come back minus the mudsling I hope that's just an oversight and not that its been nicked!
IT FEELS LIKE A NEW BIKE BUT THEN AGAIN IT COULD ALMOST BE!!
One more thing I have noted the change of engine number needs to be told to Datatag as well as DVLA

When my engine was replaced there wasn't a new engine number on it. I queried this with the dealer and was told that replacement engines don't have a new number. Does yours have a new number? If so where is it located as I couldn't find a number on my new engine.

The number is below the starter motor, got back late tonight so will check that it is a new number in the morning but there is a number there

Nigel,

I have not heard of Bilt Hamber Dynax uc wax, is it better than ACF 50 ?

Thanks

short answer I don't know, it is highly regarded in the car detailing world. I use some of their other products and they are very good.
Still waiting for the wax to fully cure so its a little tacky still. it was about £19 from amazon so its not a lot to gamble and as its a wax im hoping its more durable. its meant to self heal if scratched so it sounds impressive.

Hello guys and girls! I could do with some advice?

BMW have come back today and my 2015 GSA (5k miles) is going for major surgery! New engine, drive train and bevel!(Corrosion)

For those out there that have also had this what exactly is the process? ie when they change the engine I take it that they issue some paperwork to prove the mileage ect?

How does it work with your servicing schedule as clearly when the bike is due a 6k service the engine will be needing 600mike service! So what about 3 years time when it needs its 24k how will that work out as the engine will have covered 18k!

Sorry if it's a daft question just no idea how they play it!

Many Thanks

my bike sept 2014 had 6800m on the clock had new engine, swing arm and rear bevel, at 23 months old told them to service as well.
all bike needed was a health check £37.50+ vat, the air filter and plugs are changed at 12k regardless, new bevel came with oil so no charge there. book stamped, I get a free 600 mile service at 7400 miles. documentation of engine change is on bmw system. I also wrote in the back of my service book to record engine change. have written to DVLA and Datatag to notify on new number of engine.
hope that answers your questions

Many thanks,

Surely they give you some paperwork and record it in the service book? Please don't tell me it's only recorded on there system? Only reason I ask is what if you want to sell it? If I was buying and the seller had no paperwork I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole! Do they even give you a print out of the work carried out?

Once again thanks

No they dont give you anything. I couldn't find the engine number and was even told that replacement engines dont have a number and you dont need to tell DVLA anything!
I requested some written paperwork but they wouldn't provide anything!

Ian

When my engine was swapped. 3 years old, 15,000 miles. I was told BMW have no procedure regarding paperwork to show engine replaced. So got them to put dealer stamp and mileage of bike when changed, in inside back cover of service manual. Service bod singed it as well. When I sell it privately not everyone will/can check on BMW 's system to verify this straight away! Was also told BMW update Datatag but I had to send V5 off with new engine number, which they gave me at the dealer's.
