I bought a Shuberth S1 last autumn, and although I was in general very impressed with its quality, I was never totally happy with it as I got it a bit too snug, and it did not compress as much as I'd expected. Once I'd stuck the Autocom speakers in there, it actually became painful on the longer trips, and so I was planning to try to sort it out, or take the speakers out, before the next holiday wearing it.
Anyway, I find that I am saved the rouble as it was stolen this week, and so it's time for a replacement.
I am half tempted to find another S1 if they still exist (they must be getting like hen's teeth now), as it was a great price (£200), and to get it in the next size up this time, but I am also considering getting the newer model (S1 Pro), or a System 6.
But...
I'd appreciate hearing what people's thoughts are on the System 6 or S1 Pro relative to the S1; has anyone got experience of either move? The negatives of the Schuberth were that the dark visor did not do a great job (it did not come down far enough, so always left a split-field of light and dark, which was off-putting), and that what cutouts there were for speakers did not really seem to allow them to be recessed enough, leaving me with sore ears.
The good points were excellent build quality, very quiet, and absolutely never misted up (which was likely die to the pinlock anti-mist insert that I put in instead of the original visor).
The C3 is not an option for me (the shape is not the same as a System 6, and the System 6 just fits my head better), so it really just comes down to whether either choice has revealed a lot of niggles for people. I want a helmet that I don't notice once it's on, and this is not something that I can tell by just trying them in the shop. All too often a great fitting lid has turned out to annoy the hell out of me as the miles pile up, and trying to do a 600 mile day with a ferry crossing on top can be made so much harder if there is a whistling sound, a visor that will not stay in place, or just an annoying piece of velcro that hits you on the chin every fifty metres all the way to Nice.
Oh, and edited to add a supplementary question...
What is the difference between the S1 Pro and the R1?
Has one superseded the other, or are they just for different purposes, and, if so, what is the difference?
I went to HG in Welwyn yesterday, but they have pretty much nothing left in stock as they wait for the new 2010 ranges to arrive.
