New mac today

Transferring all the data was as simple as three clicks and connection of a firewire cable, all my software, documents, pics & iTunes Library as well as all my e-mails - transferred across onto my new 20" iMac G5...

Nadeem that sounds great I have a 17" older imac with the swivel/rotating screen but have been thinking of getting a new 20" Do you need to do anything out of the box or where can I find info on doing what you just did.

The only thing that you need that isn't in the box is a firewire cable to connect the two...all you do is boot up the old machine holding down the t button an boot up your new machine, which on the first boot up will ask if you want to transfer info from an old computer...and follow the onscreen instructions...

If you have an Apple store near you, it's worth popping in and having a chat with them...

in some ways apple are so far ahead of PC's its not funny.

in other ways - perhaps not ( price for one )

i'd buy a mac if i knew that i could upgrade and add to them.

but i don't know enough about mac's ....

It's been a few years since I had 300 Macs to look after (Vintage PowerPC, Quadra 660 & 880 AV) cut my DTP skills on a Mac Classic running PageMaker!

Of course now Mac OSX is Unix based its no more than geeksville in a nice looking suit

Upgrading - you can't upgrade the processor in an iMac, you can upgrade the RAM and the Operating System though.

Price - The iMac range starts from £899.00 and the miniMac from £359.00

still a lot more than PC but there are advantages - a stable platform, ease of use and better reliability...

Everyone knows you can build a top spec Pc for at least 1/2 - 2/3 price (approx ) of an eq mac - without monitor.

My XP pro Pc is completely stable - ok it took a bit of tweaking and constant updating - but its good now.

For me to change to a mac , i'd want so much more than a PC, but 5 mins in a mac shop won't tell me what i need to know

Yep you're right - it is normally cheaper to go the PC route, but it's still worth popping into an Apple Store - if you've never been in one - they're not like PC World where you have a spotty teenager who knows feck all - the staff know what they're talking about - in fact go to the Genius Bar and talk to them - they're the 'experts'...

So many things are sooo much simpler and intuitive in OSX Tiger it has to be used to be believed...

Don't get me wrong - i like a bit of 'ethereal nonsense' and having something for the aesthetics and design of something just for the pure hell of it. ( i own a classic saab 900 ferinstance )

i like the way apples have ploughed their own furrow and people are gradually becoming more accustomed to them, even if its thru ipod experience.

i like the way that they 'seem' to do things better - i just need more proof.
My mate has a macG5 which he uses for graphic design - and it is a lovely piece of kit.

User friendly, fast, nice to look at, nice to own etc.

but its just not enough.

if they could pull a PC version of the ipod out the bag it would help. - the iMac almost, almost did it - but joepublic saw it as too slow and un-upgradeable
All this talk of slow MHz CPU's doesn't do them any favours...

help me out here..

The iMac that I have is the 2.0Ghz G5 version and it is pretty fast, I guess it comes down to what you want it for...I use mine for a lot of Photoshop work, etc and it's a lot faster than most PC's for that....
