New mouse not working

Bought a new mouse that I can't seem to get to work with the computer. It's must be one of those new fangled ones as it seems to plug itself in. Perhaps it's a Windows only product as I use Ubuntu. Had some help from one of our cats but didn't solve the issue. Any suggestions?

perhaps

you could try putting the cat in via the CD tray and scare it out the back, or get a mac and use mountain lion.
