Anyone got a picture of how the front footrests are sprung ?

I think I have the right parts but can’t figure out the orientation

The engine that came with this bike is filthy and oily.

Can’t even touch it without getting dirty so decided to make a start cleaning it before delving inside.

About an hour of cleaning later

For some reason the bolts I’ve removed so far seem to have been Loctited in.

One of the front cover bolts gave me scare as I thought it was going to round out. A bit of heat and gentle tapping got it out though.

A bit grubby and untidy in there.

A taste of what’s to come ?

I’ve got another timing chain cover to replace the one currently fitted that’s much nicer cosmetically - so all this will be coming out anyway.

I’m in…..looking forward to this one…. Love a GS rebuild thread. Did mine years ago and chickened out of the gearbox rebuild.

Couple of small jobs today.

Got the centre stand fitted and though you can’t tell, the side covers now have the correct rubber grommets to locate them.

A small nod to the previous owners life long love of BMW motorcycles - found this badge on eBay

Got new head race outers in the freezer.

Hopefully get these in tomorrow.

Yup..It’s staying blue. Matches the colour sticker on the rear mudguard so rude not to really

The plan is not to ‘over restore’ it but get it back into tidy roadworthy condition battle scars and all.

Got distracted doing more engine cleaning this morning.

I think you can see where I missed last weekend..

The engine stand got in the way of the lower section.

Check out the sump..

Horrible sticky mess.

Pretty tidy inside though. The cam and followers look clean with an oil sheen.

One small bit of gasket stuck to the oil strainer..

And after round 2 of cleaning..

Another Motorworks order for some gaskets so I can get it buttoned up again.

I like how it looks post cleaning. More patina than vapour blasting. I might be doing the same with my next project

Pristine is all very well….. but I prefer a little patina……it’s not a brand new bike after all, so let her show her age…gracefully
The engine looks good post clean.

I like the 'patina look' as well, especially on a bike like this that's made to get a bit grubby.

Just some engine degreaser and wire brush (add a dash of elbow grease )

It’s a horrible job but the end results are worth it.

Bet you bike will have better suspension. My R nine t ‘urban’ was bloody atrocious!
