New R1200GSA running in question.

No, but to respond on a technical forum to an engineering conundrum - and to be so dismissive of an engineering solution - sometimes requires more than just the 'common sense' you claim to have. Guesswork is wonderful in its right place...

Yes. The owner's manual says not to carry more than 5kg in the top-box too. Know anyone who pays any attention to that? The owner's manual is designed to protect them from legal claims primarily, I suspect.

You won't. You didn't.

Ok be specific. Which BMW did you buy brand new and did you run it in the way that guy suggested?

If you did - respect !

May I assume you also own BMWs?

My point was that it takes these Boxer engines quite a while to sweeten up. Realistically they take a long time to run in and even longer to wear out, I don't believe that is typical Honda.

Enjoy your blade, great bikes !

That my friend is a figment of most owners of the new machine's imagination. Give me one good engineering reason why a well engineered product like a BMW engine would take a long time to sweeten up. It may take time for some owners to get use to a lump that feels like it was pulled from the dark ages but its F all to do with running in. You are right I do own a BMW and I love it, its great, a bit like I love my well made old Howard rotavator.

I don't believe that is typical Honda

I could say that about all the negative shoite I hear spouted on this very BMW forum. I don't even know you but what I have seen from these few post's convince's me you are a sudo and know next to F all about motorcycles. That is all!

WTF is a sudo? Do you mean Pseudo? (Didn't you do Greek at school?)

wtf,lighten up pal:thumb2

Eh? I thought that was a well thought out reply to someone who it obvious never uses SMS to communicate. On the whole though I will stick with my assessment:thumb

2008 1200GS. Brand New. Zero miles. KM08 XTS if you still don't believe me... good buy for somebody if / when I sell it - it's the quickest, smoothest most economical I've had. Uses utterly no oil between services.

Also did it with several previous engines, including a classic Lotus Twin-cam which I rebuilt to an extraordinary standard. I'm an engineer, not a bullshitter.

Ha Ha ! you can smell it too:D Never mind I'm sure he gets a lot of pleasure polishing it at weekends, probably cleans the bike too!:D

But if you feel it's right to buy a £16k bike and treat it like that don't let me stop you.
Well, not £16k but I have had 2 new bikes and have run in both of them according to mototuneusa.com and been very happy. My 08 1200GS ran beautifully for all its 40,000miles. This is the oil level (without top up) after a 4,686 mile return trip to Turkey in temperatures up to 40C:

All right, innit? I took a litre of oil with me and came back with it unopened.

Of course, however you run a bike in, you're not protected from white vans so when this bike was written off, I replaced it with another (identical) 08 1200GS. Both bikes were remapped by Hilltop and the one I ran in produced 4-5bhp more than the one run in by my current bike's original owner: "a BMW Technician". I don't really care about the extra power and who knows why the difference exists really but I did find it interesting.

I am neither an Engineer nor an Accountant :-)

Make sure that you refill with running in oil. Do not use semi or full synthetic. Better to leave the oil in for at least 600 miles.
Synthetic, semi synthetic, Group 3 severe hydrocracked mineral; they are all good. "No synthetic in run in" is a myth. "Running in oil" means a top grade oil, which should always be in the engine anyway.

WooHoo! :clap

You'd think, since every "How do you run-in your new Tripple-black?" thread seems to run to 4 pages, include a couple of "Handbags at dawn" posts, and the odd "You don't want to ask what I do for a living"-type posts...............

That the SEARCH function would work pretty well? :thumb2

But no..................

I've been enjoying this one:beerjug: I need to start thinking of some REALLY daft questions to post in the LC section in March:D It won't take me long, I'm sure:blast:D

Hey, Grumpy In Scotland, if all anyone had to do was use the search facility might as well close all the older sections and just have the new LC section because obviously everything else has been covered in the past :blast

This kind of thread, with a sprinkling of cabin fever, blind ego, implied threats and playground arguments is what makes £12 seem such great value.

All we need to complete the set is a flounce. Any volunteers?

Long may it continue! :)

This is what a forums are all about:D A sometimes slightly heated exchange of opinions. Who wants to be part of a collective where total agreement is the norm. As to the search facillity, these can be useful but a repeat question, to me, sometimes brings out another interesting POV or solution to a problem. Lets be honest if you and your biking mates went to the boozer and sat around the table constantly agreeing with each other it would be totally F'n boring would it not? Well forums are the same, but online:thumb Anyways everything that I said on this thread was absolutely factually correct and I am unanimous in this:D

I quite agree. I really do enjoy it! :D

Starting with what type of water can I use? How about "Can I use the recondensed water from my tumble dryer in my new part water cooled Boxer and if so, should I use soda crystals to revent limescale build up?"

How about the need to use Calgon in my new water cooled BMW since I am about to go touring in an area which suffers from hard water:D
