New R1250GS- Caliper leaking in showroom.

Not to defend the great products and build quality that made in usa implies...
But I had 2 1250 GS , first ADV and now regular and none of them leaked...the bikes need to be ridden and seals imbedded/broken in and then nothing will leak even sitting in a garage during winter months.
I have to say one thing though these Hayes calipers feel much better as in less spong and less free travel than the previous Brembo callipers on the 1200GS...

I and two mates all have brand new r1250gs bikes. All three bikes have leaking callipers. Between us we’ve probably owned over 40 brand new bikes with hydraulic brakes. Not one of those bikes have needed the brake seals imbedded/ broken in, so I call bullshit on your theory. I believe that the change to Hayes callipers was most likely done on a cost cutting basis and BMW took a chance on fitting cheap, poor quality parts. A bad decision.

It is with regret , slight oh fuc , that my bike is now leaking , well spraying over the front rim after a hard ride out. I am still a convert to the Hayes as they are better , back to the dealer on a collect and return basis ( breakdown) so let the warrentee take effect.
I will however insist on a rebuild on both calipers or replacement as a set . No brembo for me as I feel this would be a backward step , unless they have improved on the last system.

Like I said I don't defend American made sh*t that leaks but mine work fine and are better than the Brembos who always felt spongy and had a long empty travel despite bleeding the brakes over and over...I know of 5 bikes all 1250GS who were sitting over the winter months in my dealers showroom;2 were leaking right out of the crate and 3 were not.All it took was a good ride on the leaky ones and they were dry...I don't work for BMW and don't know if the Hayes are cheaper than the Brembo or not or why some Hayes are leaking and others are not and if there is a fix...But both my 1250's were and are dry but I rarely use my brakes...
But going back to Brembo ? I wouldn't because the Hayes feel better with less free play and much firmer/less spongy feel!

Unless someone knows the exact reason for failure ( I’ve seen several plausible theories) it’s hard to say where the problem lies.

The Calipers were designed in house by BMW as clearly stated by their head tech in interviews, so has bmw made an error in design or is the quality control at Hayes lacking ? So throwing mud at Hayes until the facts are known is pissing in the wind.

What matters is if the latest version is fixed or not. Brembo have had more than their fair share of problems some of which have taken some time to fix. Like 3 re designs of m/c to fix air intake problem that required a re bleed once a day ( I’ve been there ). But they sorted it in the end, no one died, it was still a great bike, life goes on etc etc.

As I wasn’t there I can’t comment. I’ve heard several sides to that story, only those that are there know the real one.

Just a cheap shot I guess...I personally hated the Brembos on my 1200GS-LC because they always felt spongy no matter how much you bled them...I had my dealer bleed them 4 times and that was it...That was probably the reason why BMW switched to Hayes because I can imagine that other people felt the same way !

As for Kevin Ash I was not there either or not know the guy but I can only imagine...a new bike...lots of journos...lots of testosterone...everyone wants to show off his/her lack of talents... But I will say the 1250 will wobble with bags & topcase going faster than 130mph...despite having a steering dampener...but this is a different story !

The Brembos brake as good or short as the Hayes but they have much more travel at the lever and don't feel as firm...I like it short and hard...

Depends what your reference point is. They are perfectly fine but the same Calipers matched to radial m/c’s is noticeably better.

I’ve only ridden the Hayes on service loaners for short periods so didn’t get enough ride time to make a sensible judgement on how they compare.

But Brembo do have a bit of history of recalls with their braking components - TBF, mainly relating to non BMW bikes. Maybe these bike manufacturers specify a lower grade of component?

Yep , I have an issue , but it will be fixed , I have a second hand set of the Brembro but decided not to fit them as the new brakes are better after given them a good go , shame but as you posted , I take the risk and still have the balls to admit when it goes tits up. I replace my bikes just before the warrentee ends, so life is simple. Life is not black and white , have you nothing better to do , or are you just bored and like to drag things up that we commented on last years , experience has however changed the feeling. I was wrong , and I admit it , the Hayes are still a better caliper now after using them for 10 K

It would take a brave man to own one of these out of warranty.Im heading towards early retirement hopefully and was going to keep this 1250 longer than I normally keep a bike but that's not going to happen as I have had a few issues along with quite a few people on here.

I think that’s half the problem !!
Especially with the take off of PCPs.
Nobody on here seems to keep a modern GS out of warranty as nobody trusts them .

I think you could say that about most bike to be fair , all have issues but not always published or discussed. I have mates using other brands which have issues and perhaps not as good back up.

It certainly does seem that BMW has the best warranty/back up.But as I believe it’s second only to Yamaha in issuing recalls,I guess that’s a good thing.
