In less than 12 hrs, I will have made the deal for a new 07 1200GS. Wire wheels, ABS, trip comp, traction control, everything but tire pressure monitor! I am so excited. It has been almost 3 years since I binned the SV650 and pulverised both wrists. Ouch. My first ride since then was a test ride on the 1200 last week, followed by a test ride on the Dakar 650. No contest. I have been pouring over the forums, deciding on the most suitable first farkle. It's going to be crash bars. I know it's been done to death, but I have narrowed it down to SWM, or TTech. My question revolves around the pros and cons of anchoring to the frame (SWM), or anchoring to the engine (TTech). The price is right on SWM, so they are currently my first choice. I am not too fussed about removing for dealer service, so that's a wash. Anyway, it's a real treat reading all the posts, and yes, I did many searches on crash bars. If you have any advice for a new GSER, I'm ready to learn! thanks

Welcome to the collective and congratulations on the new purchase. :thumb

THe SMW Motech bars work very well on the bike doing exactly what they are designed for as I found out last year when an octogenarian cage driver pulled out on me and sent the bike sliding down the hard shoulder at 50 mph, panels damaged but the nothing done to frame, engine or the structural bits.

I switched over to the TT bars after the incident but only for reasons of aesthetics as I'm a fashion tart and they match the GSA pannier rails and rack I have fitted.

At the end of the day it's got to come down to personal choice.

you can put upper bars on the motech ones and then add drive / fog hids
it only costs £20 for the bm chap to remove bars anyway and saves finding a spanner in the garage

I've 'used' the Motech bars, both toppling over in a car park, off road and most recently in a shunt from a car that caused £4.5k worth of damage (the engine was unscathed apart from some scratches to the rocker covers).

I have replaced with the same :thumb2

They do fill up with mud when riding through ruts though :D

Why have you eliminated wunderlich / hepco and becker bars? - they are much cheaper than the TT ones and do a very good job of protection. They bolt to both the engine and the frame

+1

The Hepco & Becker engine bars, IMHO look the best out of all that are available and I've heard they do their job well. :thumb2 Also, it's not necessary to remove or loosen anything for standard maintenance with the H&B's. Whereas with both the SWM and TT, you have to remove or at least loosen something.

My '07 1200GS, with the same options as you've spec'd except the wire wheels, as we have to pay a lot of money for them in Europe.

A side view showing how good the H&B's look and fit in well with the frame colour.

Congrats on the order BTW! :thumb2 I hope you don't have to wait too long to get it!

Foto John, my new 1200 is exactly like yours (one minor difference: I have the wire wheels). That is one fine looking machine. I just came back from the dealer, and the deal is on hold. It seems I was originally speaking with the sales manager 4 days ago, and today I was speaking with someone else who is unable to complete the deal as per the discussion I had with the sales manager. Very frustrating to say the least. I am waiting for a phone call at this very moment. The sun is shining, it is 24 degrees outside (celsius) and I want to go!! However, I worked all night, and am living on 3 hours sleep, so perhaps it is best to get some rest while they scramble to get in touch with the sales manager. Oh well, it may be tommorow morning before it's all said and done. sigh...
