New rider with a hello and a question about screens on GSA's!

It's a motorcycle FFS! Wind is what it's all about, think dog & car window!

I never had the luxury of screens when I started motorcyling.

If you want to ride in a cocoon use the car.

Your wisdom has prompted me not to fit a screen to my KTM 300XC.
Thanks for your guidance, I nearly made a big mistake:blast

And when I started riding I never had he luxury of waterproof clothing, warm gloves, visors that you can see through, bikes that start, tyres that grip or lights that light, and brakes that stop.

Things have moved on.

Seems a shame that somebody that has just bought a new bike can't ask a question to people that have owned one for a while, without somebody spewing out some keyboard bravado.

Op. Try you're seat on its lowest setting:nenau

+1 :clap:clap:clap

I'm about 6ft and I had exactly the same problem. On a long and / or high speed trip I not only suffered with noise (yes I've got ear plugs) but eventually the amount of movement in my helmet/head generated by the turbulence gave me blurred vision as well.

First step was to change the seat for a lower one but that didn't fix it.

I tried the TT extender and while it made a difference it wasn't as good as I wanted. btw, I've still got that if you want to try / buy.

I ended up with the standard GSA screen and a set of Tobinators bought secondhand off here. These allow a little more air up the back of the screen which (as far as I can tell - I'm not an expert) reduces the low pressure area behind the screen and thus reduces the turbulence

Now have no problems with turbulence and the screen is high enough to keep most of the rain off too.

I agree with those that have suggested lowering the screen that this is a solution to the turbulence but it also increases the amount of rain / spray / crap / flies that get onto your visor.

Before you buy see if there's someone on here in your area with a screen / extender / ??? that you could try / borrow. Different things work best for different people. No idea why but there we are.

Good luck whatever you choose.

Dave

Thanks for the help guys, it's much appreciated.

@iandavid Yes, it's a bike. No, it isn't my first one (FFS).

Without trying to be too antagonistic - I am new to the board after all!! - whilst noise doesn't bother me when I'm chugging around usually, I've done enough multi-thousand mile trips to know when I need to do something about it, for longer trips. If I really wanted wind in my face, dog out of the window riding I could have bought a Harley, worn a p**s pot helmet and my user name would have been something like Lemmy or Ogri (apologies if there's a Lemmy or Ogri here!!). Luckily, as Bone said (+1 to that), things have moved on some. I started biking (and have done so without a break) 34 years ago.... need I go on....? ;)

For the Spain trip we'll leave on a Wednesday night and come back the following Monday night having ridden from Le Havre through mid-Western France, Andorra, the Pyrenees, Northern Spain for WSBK at Aragon, Barcelona, the Millau Bridge and the Auvergne before heading back to Le Havre. To give us time to pootle around enjoying the scenery/twisty stuff where it's good enough to enjoy we'll have to motor on where it's not - and these parts are the reason for looking into noise reduction. I know through the few miles I've done so far it will make the trip that much more enjoyable if I can reduce the noise at speed by an amount. And for me, enjoying my biking is what it's all about. For the trip after this one it's most likely to be more about getting airflow to me to reduce heat, and nothing about noise reduction, as I fancy a trip to Morocco - which will probably be more in keeping with the type of bike the GSA is. And for that I'll be asking different questions!!! :thumb

Hey Tonka, thanks for the post. Am interested in the TT extender and I'm only 20 miles or so from you. I'm going to subscribe anyway so when I have I'll pm you and see if we can't sort something out if that's ok?

Cheers

Phil

had the tt spoiler. went for the givi airflow. looks ugly but really works for me. 90mph with shark openline lid (open face mode) can hear my tunes on my scala g4 and recieve calls no probs. do a search for givi airflow, so many cannot be wrong. i did think of inventing a motorised system to extend & lower the top sliding screen but it all seemed too involved.

Are you on a GS or GSA simply?

Phil

I am 5.11 with a GSA, I bought the tt spoiler and it worked for me. Riding to Rome last summer I got too hot behind it and had to ride with my head stuck out the side so I took it off and lowered the screen. They only clip on so find someone near you with one and ask to try it out.

Dave, you have a pm

I'm going to ask a silly question. What are tobinators, where do they fit and what do they do? Looked on NN's sight but can't for the life of me work it out.
