Both myself and my brother bought new R1200GS yesterday afer having a test on both the GS and the 650GS.

Found both bikes in different leagues.

I was dissapointed with the 650, did not impress me at all. The brakes were very poor, especially the rear. (felt like a drum brake). I hoped to like this and save myself alot of money, but when I got on the 1200GS........ahhh bisto......
Just what I was wanting out of a bike. Quiet, smooth and very happy at 40-50mph for a large bike. I just wanted to ride and ride. Well worth the extra!!
I have ridden lots of Japanese sports bikes, but I always end up riding faster and faster, which you can do, but the speed you are doing to get the thrill is crazy and dangerous. I did not want that feeling with the GS, and it pulled it off in spades.

My may sound like an old fart, I am 36.

So we are planning on touring Europe next year on both GS's. Can't wait!!! but will be getting alot of practice in over winter.

You have made a very sensible choice - I am into my 7th year of big GS's. When you plan your European tour remember that Lyon in the middle of France is one of the most interesting cities so DON'T take the tunnel or the by-pass; try and spend a day or two in the vicinity; let me know when & perhaps we can meet up.

Now then you young "Old Fart" welcome to the asylum, enjoy your stay & the new GS.......:thumb

I was 38 when I got my first GS, you're never to young to see the light !!!

Sportsbikes are a blast, but back in the real world.........

Enjoy the bikes (and the adventures).:thumb2

Thanks for all the replies.:bounce1

Having spent some time reading on the forum, I am now alittle concerned with the reliability of the brand. I took that for granted buying BMW.

For all I knocked the jap bikes, they never let me down :nenau:nenau

I hope that the 2009 spec built bike has all the electrical gremlins fixed.

Welcome to the wonderful world of GS ownership :thumb2

The 650 really is a different animal, for a start it's about half the price :D Did you consider an 800 too? They're great fun. Still, the 12's the daddy really.

Thanks for all the replies.:bounce1

They're not all bad, just ride the thing and enjoy it.

If anything does go wrong you've got a massive amount of backup from BMW, in two years I've called them twice, both over really simple warranty fixes, which were sorted in a day or two.
