To my mind, the best colour combination

Looks lovely, just need to swap out that 1100 lump for a sweet 850 unit, then it would be truly a great bike :D

Had mine for 20 years now and every time I even think about updating it, I look at the prices of the new ones and the problems with new fangled electronics (that I really don't need) and decide to keep it. I can't see that I will ever want to give it up and I have no need for two bikes. I must admit that if Camelot come knocking, a chassis up rebuild would be nice, I can only imagine what state some the bits I can't get to will be in by now.

Enjoy it

:blast

There were only 37 of these 1100's in the U.K. when new, making them one of the rarest GS's ever produced.... dropping an 850 motor in would be criminal.

I am enjoying the bike. There are two things about it that surprise me a bit after owning a 2002 1150GSA. The 5 speed rather than the 6 speed is no issue or hindrance, the second is the 1100 is as fast or faster than the 1150GSA. I put this down to previous owners attention to the fuelling map the bike has, it's a GS Johns series 9 chip now and near perfect I figure. Conversely if the 1150 GSA had had the same attention it, undoubtedly, would have faired better in the comparison to the 1100.

BMW deigned the 5 speed the way they wanted it to be... The 6 speed the way they thought the customers wanted it to be... The 1100 generation of bikes were probably at the end of the BMW pure design period where they built them and you came round to liking them... I baulked at the 5speed design for the 1st 1 1/2 times of ownership and by the 3rd 11gs saw the logic behind it... Both my old R1200rt hex and my present overdrive 6th 1150rt need more gearchanges than my 11s, especially around 60-70ish...
