NEWSFLASH for 1200 owners

Hi Sparky,
I have a May 2005 1200 (3 months out of warranty!) and I was just told yesterday that my bike needs to in for a day to have the seals between the engine and the gearbox replaced as they are starting to leak. I was quoted £250 labour plus £60 for parts (to do all the seals while the engine is apart), with possibly more if there is clutch contamination.
If there is a precedent for BMW picking up the tab for this I seriously interested in knowing about this and how to seek a contrib from BMW.
I was also warned the rear disc will need replaced by some time too.
Ian

I took mine in for a service and the dealer told me that BMW knew there was a documented problem with the seals, he put it through as a warranty claim and hey presto BMW paid (before the work was carried out!). If I was you, I'd mention it to the dealer and see if they will put it thorugh as a claim. Hpope this makes sense, just come in from th epub.

Discs

Hi,

I'm waiting for a call from my dealer at the mo - there is a recall/warranty replacement for the front discs on the 07 1200GSA.

Only for owners who have COMPLAINED though - ie not a general recall.

Symptoms are of a warped disc, juddering at low speed during braking, the new setup has fully floating discs and is not available as yet, as far as I know.

Talk to your dealer ifthis applies!

Cheers, Rick.

Is there any chance you could find the recall number? I've found things progress so much faster when you've got a number. Like getting the horn connector.....

Seems to be normal then I've had all my disc replaced under warranty. GSA12

Brake Recall

Slowdown,

Don't know the "Recall Number" - it is in a sort of "Engineers Report" that all dealers get issued with.

As I said, don't think it is a general recall, more of a fix for those with problems (or those who shout loudest!).

The report I saw though is a detailed fix for the front discs with new discs and fixings to make the front 'fully floating'. No mention of the rear as I recall but may be in there as well.

My dealer promised to contact me when the fix is issued and I assume that as no word, the fix not out yet. :mmmm

Cheers, Rick.

front discs?

i:nenau know of the rear disc prob as i'm on my fourth in 16500miles. i had no idea there was an issue with the front.:nenau

I must admit I don't visit this site often enough because when I do I get lots of good entertainment aswell as advice. The recalls on the rear disc and the gear box seals are well worth knowing about and even although my bike is out of warranty I trust that BM will honour their pledge and repair/replace gratis.

I thought seal culling was illeagl!!!

Sorry.

Can the seals/rear disc be replaced as a preventative measure under warranty? I have a 55 plate 2006 1200GS and am worried that the warranty will run out before this crap happens. The first owner only did 2,500 miles in a year or so and I am worried that things will start happening as I pile the miles on.

Don't worry it'll probably happen to you too :-) My 05 seals went at about 6,000 miles. It's been fine for the subsequent 14,000 miles so I'm hoping that it won't happen again.

I still can't get my head around why BMW are still letting this happen - if the dealer can make a good fix then why can't BMW build them right in the first place - this has been going on for 3 years, how crap is that!

Mine got a new disc (for no reason that I can see it was barely worn) when it had its fd changed last summer. New disc looks identical so unless its a different materil I dunno what the problem is. Mines none ABS and its still on the original pads and front discs after 20k miles

Mainshaft seal still hanging in there.

But don't worry folks new GS's will be made in Taiwan so all these minor probs will be a thing of the past...

Sorry for sounding thick but im not that technical minded, how will you know when gear box seals have gone, do you just get clonky gear changes, or is it a lot worse. I have an 05 GS with about 22,000 miles on the clock thats still under warranty.

The seals don't effect the gears... Perhaps if they get bad enough the oil will make the clutch really oily...

Wash the bike... (yea... I know... :augie).... Ride it a couple hundred miles.... look for a sign of (slight) oily black gunk between the transmission and engine mate line.. There are pictures in a thread from a year or so back... Show this to your BMW dealer and book an appointment....
