Nice rides from Edinburgh?

Im looking for suggestions for nice roads to go riding on around Edinburgh please.

Im riding up from Sheffield with a mate at the end of this month for a 2 night stay at The Gillis Centre in Edinburgh. We don't have any particular plans once we are there, but if any of you have suggestions for places to see etc then id appreciate it.

You could head east along the coast road and return via the back roads. Either sit in traffic and go via the north of Edinburgh, Portobello and Musselburgh or take the bypass and come off at Port Seaton/Cockenzie. After that you're on the coast Road to North Berwick via Aberlady and Gullane. You can then head out the back of North Berwick into the country and see a bit of East Lothian and work your way back. If you want to make a day of it you can head to Haddington from North Berwick and head out the back to the borders via Gifford. They are all great roads to either cruise or scratch.
 
You could do worse than head out along the A70, quickly accessible from Edinburgh, an almost immediately onto roads without traffic or traffic lights for many miles
 
Follow the coast round the East Neuk of Fife. Visit Anstruther, Crail and St.Andrews.
The secret bunker is worth a visit.
 
Fuckall worth wasting yer time on south of the Tay....get north into the hills...Blairgowrie/A93 1 hour from the bridge..get early start and get north..
 
Consider on your way up north, cut through towards Langholm on the back roads (perhaps via Alston and Brampton) and take the B709 and go towards Innerleithen, this is a lovely route, very light traffic, no police or speed cameras. The scenery is great, you'll pass the biggest Bhuddist temple in the UK. Carry on through Innerleithen on the 709 and after you get past the golf club the road will open up into a valley, there's a very long straight and you can wind up the throttle to very naughty speeds. This road will eventually bring you onto the A7 about 20 miles short of Edinburgh.
Have a good trip.
 
When you are done in Edinburgh, take the road down to Kelso (its rather pleasant) then you could make your way home from there.

I have a brilliant route to get to Edinburgh that i can send you if you have garmin
 
If you've never been to Embra before then you'll want to spend your time in the city once you've got here. Lots to do without needing the bike. So I'd take Fatal's advice and enjoy the roads in the borders on the way up. If you're looking for an evening spin then go with Ruralman's idea or use the southbound part of that route as your return route but head over to Newcastleton and link up with the A68 via Kielder.

By all means head further north on a future trip but it doesn't sound as if you'll have the time on this occasion.

BTW. Take a cover if you can and lock the bikes together. Lots of bikes being nicked in the city at the moment. The Gillis Centre is in a quiet part of town and has off street parking but you never know!
 
Three of us went for a run round Fife last week, what a disaster! Crossed the bridge from Edinburgh turned right along the coast to Kirkcaldy and then followed the coast road east, every village, town etc. has 20mph speed limit even on the main A class roads. Together with the amount of traffic light controlled roadworks it took forever to get to St Andrews.
Head for Stirling on the M9 then Balloch you can then head for Inverarry or just follow the road round Loch Lomond better during the week. As someone has already said the borders have some really good roads even the A7 near the border is a good road for bikes.

Well my Scottish expedition is under way. We set off from Sheffield yesterday and got to our accommodation at the Gillis Centre, which is a perfect place to stay with a motorbike with its secure off road parking.

Today we set off over the Forth Road Bridge at 10am and went up the A9 to Alness (topside of Inverness) to have a cup if tea with an old friend I haven't seen for 20 yrs. the A9 seemed to go on for ever! Then down to the Dores Inn next to Loch Ness for dinner. Then continued down the A82 through Fort William and later through some lovely scenery, then continued down past Loch Lomand, A811 to Stirling and then got back to Edinburgh at 11pm.

My arse and back are in agony and with the way I'm feeling I'd be quite happy never to sit on a motorbike ever again. Except I've got to ride back to Sheffield tomorrow!!
 
The A9 in my opinion is one boring road for heading north on. The A82 is by far the most scenic and more fun to ride than the A9. I've done a hell of alot of touring in Scotland and I avoid the A9 if I can. Pity you didn't go over to the west coast and North like Easter Ross and Sutherland as there's some brilliant roads for the bike with outstanding scenery.
