No More Standard Wheels!!!

Well they have just launched the 1200GS explorer which is only available with the alloy wheels so they are going to have to get another supplier at some point.
Personally I'd get the spoked wheels as they look much better and aren't that hard to clean (gunk and a jet wash) As for making a difference to handling - forget it - any difference will be totally unnoticable unless your name is Valentino Rossi

Phil

They are if you dont clean them every two minutes, trust me. I love the look of spokes but the 12 is never going to really need them, even off road, and the unsprung weight does make a difference. With a 19" front wheel the 12 isnt the fasted turning bike, even with alloys. All IMHO of course :D

I thought we'd alread established that you were a more sedentary rider.......

leaving that aside a moment...

are you the stig, only in colour?

I'd be very, very surprised if anyone here could tell the difference between alloys and spoked wheels the same dia and width with EXACTLY the same tyres on. :mmmm

...Strangely enough, my bike is quite a different animal with alloys on it...

are they 'exactly' the same dia , width and same tyres and pressures ??

Well i've got 17" ally (Star Pattern) ST Wheels on my GS12 .MUCH better for road use.It has to be said, i have no interest in off roading, but, like owning a H-D or Wing or Sports bike,if getting you GS dirty floats your boat, get out there and do it.Incidentally,i have decided to keep the Beast as i cannot afford to trade to a Megamoto,so i may well be selling my Std ally's when i can get my sorry ass into gear.

I made a warranty claim on the front spoked wheel on my Oct. '06 GS because I considered the runout too great. The dealer principal exchanged it without measuring the runout.
The replacement wheel felt worse; the runout was measured on a static balancer at the BMW dealer as 1.35mm vertical runout and 1.2mm lateral, against BMW's maximum permissable runout of 1.5mm.
On smooth roads (a rarity here in Oz) when the bike's cranked over I can feel, via the 'bars, the front of the bike hopping up and down due to the runout of the rim. This is obviously not overly confidence inspiring when you're over a fair way !
The other day another rider stopped next to me at the lights and asked whether I knew my rear wheel was buckled ....
My 1150 has done 177,000kms and both rims are still perfect. If I was ordering a new GS I'd be ordering alloys, in spite of the fact the spoked wheels "look better".
The quality of the spoked wheels is disgraceful.

Schtum - a good rider adapts to and exploits the limitations of their bikes handling ;)
My spoked wheeled MZ baghira well and truly out turned your VFR a few years ago!

And my Spoked wheel, cast iron brake drummed Triumph trophy has outurned a few fancy modern sports bikes as well:)

No more half priced spoked wheels........

My dealer has just called me on the telephone to tell me that BMW have bought out BBS Wheels and start on the production of the standard GS wheels immediately!
I must admit I was a little disappointed at the news, as I had got used to the idea of staying with spoke wheels, after initially wanting casts due to the ease of cleaning, lightness, etc!
