Am I missing something, or is there no oil pressure warning light? I can only see reference to automatic oil level check / warn which is a totally different thing all together. I know oil level would pre-empt loss of oil pressure usually but would seem a little strange to monitor coolant temp accurately but not oil pressure?

The current GS doesn't drink oil, so it's all irrelevant.:thumb

I would imagine if the oil pressure drops the whole dash would light up oil pressure will be monitored by the computer an it will let you know if there is a problem

is displayed until the oil level is detected as being correct again. According to chapter 3 pg 20 item no 8 symbol 2 is displayed in the warning symbols section of the lcd screen. Chapter 3 pg 29 and 34 refer to oil level being too low and advice to check oil level.

Yes, you are correct sir. No mention of the oil pressure. But oil flow and oil pressure goes hand in hand. If the oil pump fails to pick up any oil then the oil level is low and you will have warning on the dash. If you have a failure within the engine and loses oil (provided you have not noticed any noise and a sliding rear wheel already) then the same scenario as above regardless of where the oil go. In the latter case the engine would be FUBAR anyway. However as with all electrickerty that can go wrong, a good old mk1 eyeball on the sight glass before setting off is the best thing.

Seen plenty of knackered engines due to low oil pressure that had full sumps and oil up to the top of the dipstick, a low oil level switch would not have saved them BUT the drivers not ignoring the oil pressure warning light would have

surely oil pressure requirements are different for different parts of the engine - which pressure should be monitored?

Oil pressure will vary through the system, its usually measured just after the oil pump as a measure of the pumps performance against the natural back pressure of the system, just having the correct oil level, does not ensure that the system is running at the required pressure - heavy wear on plain bearings for instance, will dramatically reduce the ability of the pump to maintain pressure, therefore indicating intervention required. according to the BMW service system CD, there is a combined oil & level sensor - I would love to know why they choose not to have a dedicated low oil warning light?

There is a blank plug just above the oil filter for a gauge to be connected the specs are

Engine oil pressure
Engine oil at operating temperature
at idle speed
1+ 0.5
− 0.2
bar

- at engine speed min 5000 min-1
4.5+ 0.5
− 0.5
bar

Strange how the oil pressure is not monitored all the time

If the oil pressure was monitored and displayed on the LCD there'd be a gazillion questions on the site about what the correct pressure should be and loads of whingers claiming that there bike was not fit for purpose because the pressure was 0.001 Bar low.

It would would make an interesting distraction from the clacks and grip issues ;) on the other hand best just leave things as they are :)
