I wonder if any one can help.:duno :duno :duno

My 2002 1150GS has recently developed a noise at the rear end. I know it's very difficult to describe a noise, but to my ears it sounds very similar to a chain going around sprocket, a type of metallic whirring noise!

The bike has just covered 36k and had it's service, where the swinging arm (pivot?) bearings were changed due to sideways wheel movement. They were tightened at the 24k service, and when removed it was obvious they were well and truly knackered.:(

The noise is transmission based. I have tried coasting in neutral and with the engine switched off and it's still there.:duno :duno

Today a friend pushed the front end down with the front brake applied and you could hear the noise (and feel a slight vibration at the handlebars) when the rear wheel was turned by hand. If I grip the back wheel and try to move it from side to side, it seems to give a 'rough' click and slight side ways movement.

My thinking at the moment is rear wheel bearings. What do you think? If I am right, and it is the bearings is a simple DIY job or is it down to the local dealers? Is it likely to be a costly repair?:tears :tears :tears :tears :tears :tears

All advice and thoughts greatly appreciated. :rob

edit...just found an old thread by Steptoe.....his descriptions seem to match my symptoms

hello...
had the same with mine and it turned out to be rear bearing simple job if you can get the old one off and remember to put the shims back in :blast
oh and replace the seal with a new one.

Sounds like the final drive bearing for sure. I could feel mine going through the foot pegs too.

I've had two go on my 1100GS, the first rumbled on for many months and many thousands of miles before it gave up. The second just went and pissed oil all over the rear of the bike.

Not an expensive job to get done. Not sure about DIY, it's deffo out of my league:rolleyes:

Many thanks for your swift replies.:rob :rob :rob :rob :rob

Looking at what's involved I think it's down to my local independent rather than risk it myself. Nothing worse than trying a job yourself, messing it up and then needing to find/hire a trailer to get an immobile bike to the shops :blast :blast I'll ring around tomorrow and get a few prices:tears :tears :tears .

Obviously I'll keep everyone posted of the results :type .

Hi Mike,

Get in touch with Roy @ RGM 01772 812395, now located at Bretherton, Nr Preston/Leyland. He's ex-Southport Superbikes & is recommended by loads from round here... Always fettles mine before the TT.

See the "Northern Steptoe" thread.

Thanks for that Paul...he's my first port of call!

He's done my last 3 services at a fair price. I agree...highly recommended.

Bike fixed

Been to RGM today...usual good service with a smile.

Both rear bearings replaced (thank God I didn't try it at home...even Roy struggled to get the small bearing off!).

Everything sorted....and it took less time than expected, so I paid less than I had been quoted.

Well pleased.
