I wonder if any one can help.
My 2002 1150GS has recently developed a noise at the rear end.
I know it's very difficult to describe a noise, but to my ears it sounds very similar to a chain going around sprocket, a type of metallic whirring noise!
The bike has just covered 36k and had it's service, where the swinging arm (pivot?) bearings were changed due to sideways wheel movement. They were tightened at the 24k service, and when removed it was obvious they were well and truly knackered.
The noise is transmission based. I have tried coasting in neutral and with the engine switched off and it's still there.
Today a friend pushed the front end down with the front brake applied and you could hear the noise (and feel a slight vibration at the handlebars) when the rear wheel was turned by hand. If I grip the back wheel and try to move it from side to side, it seems to give a 'rough' click and slight side ways movement.
My thinking at the moment is rear wheel bearings. What do you think? If I am right, and it is the bearings is a simple DIY job or is it down to the local dealers? Is it likely to be a costly repair?
All advice and thoughts greatly appreciated.

edit...just found an old thread by Steptoe.....his descriptions seem to match my symptoms
