Norway Norway Norway!

It's all good stuff.................! Maybe i'll skip the north and have a 'fjord holiday' instead!

Still so much to see and with the ferry connection from Newcastle i'll loose at least a day each way!:blast

A fjord holiday sounds like a perfect holiday! :clap
If you get more rain then you like it is only a few hours to the east side of the tallest mountains, where it is most likely drier. Stay there for a day or two, and then return to the fun west.
A local phenonema: They are getting more rain in Flåm then in Lærdal/Borgund! Something to keep in mind before you put up your tent.

Liv, you've not been in Scotland for a while so i'll update your poem a wee bit!

I have a granny............She's my Hindustani granny
She's my Hindustani granny from Bombay
We always have japatis with our curried mince and tatties
So we're sitting on the lavvy everyday!

Any offence to hindu's is not intended and my granny used to sing this wee song to me when i was a kid..........! I don't think there's much of a Noreweigian connection either but maybe you could substitute japati for pylsur or polse................!

Thank you!

And pølse goes with almost everything.

If you are coming over to see fjords, hairpins and mountains; skip Sweden.
I'm not writing this because I'm Norwegian. Look at a good topographic map, and you'll see what I mean. :)

:) Liv.

Thanks for the tip but I'm not going to see fjords as the reason for the trip. It's to spend time with a good German mate and visit some former workmates from CERN where I used to and my mate still works at. Plan is to visit some in Sweden and Finland on the way up and return by a different route. Seems wise to pick up the Norwegian side . :D

It would also be nigh on impossible in the time we have to ride up and back through Norway so blast up with visits and then cruise back and chill.

+1:thumb

Nordkapp's a long way to go for a sticker!:D

Fjords are more fun...............!

Now't wrong with Sweden or the Nordkapp but having been up there twice i'm just saying...............!

Having said that i may meet you on the road as i'm planning my 'Ten Year Nordkapp Anniversary Trip' late may early june!

Are you saying that you wish you had never been to Nordkapp ? Your having been there twice and planning a third one this year would seem contradictory to your statement  Once will be enough for me. :D

It isn't the furthest point on the mainland. For me it is just my furthest north point and marks the change of direction from northwards to southwards. Not the halfway mark and i appreciate the scenery in Sweden will be different to Norway (not 'better' or 'worse' .....). The people and visiting them is as much a part of the journey as the riding. :beerjug:

That I won't be entering the theme park at Nordkapp is a given :D

And alas we won't meet as I'll be home by the 19th :(

Have a great and safe trip :thumb2

I like the Nordkapp.............It's just such a long way to get there!

You pass some incredible scenery on the way there and i've never had enough time to explore places like the Lofotens etc.

I love the 'Pine Fresh flash' forests in Sweden aswell it's just different!:thumb2

Have a great trip!:thumb

Thanks :thumb2

I'm really looking forward to it. I worked in the Yukon when i was younger but never got up to the Barren Lands so the open shield country of northern Sweden/Norway will be interesting. Whilst the fjords are cool and unique, having lived in the Rockies and Alps, I am used to mountains and lakes.

5 days of hard riding to get up there and then 9 to get back so should have time to smell the flowers on the return. Certainly it won't be anything like as direct a route as the one up there.

Got all my kit thrown into a big box over xmas. The trip research and my daughter's wedding (Saturday just gone....) have meant that winter has flown by :D

What bike have you got ?

I've got a 1200GSA but rode up to the Nordkapp on an 03 1150GSA then my Defender in 07 which was a bit of a cheat really as i've got heated seats and a good heater.............Still a challenge though especially the bit over to the Russian border.

I've crossed the Arctic Circle in 08 on my HP2 Enduro with Mrs P on her then F650GS.............Spent most of the time on that trip massaging my arse and looking for fuel.............!:blast

The years in between I was mostly in Iceland on the 1150GSA or cycling:thumb

We arrived at the Nordkapp on the fourth night each time but travelling from Stavanger or Haugesund then and took it easy on the way home. Sounds like your an old hand in the 'north lands'...........!

Norway - snow on the high ground

Heads-up for those crossing high mountain plateaus or passes.

RN 7 over Hardangervidda was unexpectably closed by snow yesterday.

Should you meet snow and are not able to turn round, please find a spot with a bit of shelter and sit it out. It won't be long before help arrives.

Driving an overloaded bike on sommer tyres on ice and snow is best left to the local talent, you will probably end up in the nearest ditch. That hurts!

Safe travels,

Peter, in Oslo

Rjukan.

You know about the Heawy Water Plant at Rjukan, and how a group of Norwegians tried to stop that?
Well, this is not about that, this is how to get to the TOP of a mountain, to get a reall great view, and NOT climb all day!
:idea
Gaustabanen!
http://gaustabanen.no/turen-opp
First one tram horizontally, then another tram (or should I call it train?) steep up to he top. Then walk inside the mountain, and then you open a door and see the view.
In perfect weather you can se 1/6 of Norway from the top!

If you click at Gaustatoppen here you can see the mountain Gaustatoppen, where the tram/trains are inside: http://www.krossobanen.no/webcampage.htm
And a map: https://maps.google.no/maps?saddr=R...oq=rjuk&t=p&mra=ls&z=13&lci=com.panoramio.all
And the only link in English: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...inn_Municipality_Telemark_Eastern_Norway.html

-What do you think?
Wanna meet me and go up there with me?
My mom has been there and she tell me it is so special, and not hard for a sofa potato like me. :thumb2
