Yup, I have standard 1150GS with 25K on the clock. When accelerating hard in final gear I get a rattle from the engine. It does not sound too serious, no grinding noise. When I accelerate smoothly it does not happen. Maybe my valves need adjusting

does it happen at lowish revs in high gears as you roll on the throttle, & is it a knock or a rattle?

me too

Sounds exactly like mine, just happens when under load in higher gears - assuming it's pinking. :ymca It sounds like lots of tiny bits of metal bouncing around in a dry and empty tank.

No idea how long it's been doing it, I only noticed the other day when I went out without the MP3 player .:o

I'm trying Shell Optimax to see if that helps, otherwise I'll switch to higher octane fuel. I'm currently using 95RON so I guess I'll need to find some 98. (No doubt someone's gonna come on here and tell me Optimax is 98RON - ho hum)

Anyone else got any ideas

Cheers Jim :beerjug:

Optimate is the only 98RON sold in the UK all the other high octane "performance" fuels like BP Ultimate are 97RON :)

This is exactly what it sounds like (Thanks Burfcontrol). It only happens to me on the motorway. If I'm in final gear and doing 3 to 4k revs and then blip the throttle hard I get the noise until the engine revs have climbed to meet to added petrol intake.

Maybe its because of the hot weather

I hear everyone talking about PINKING  What the hell is it? Can someone explain what it means in layman terms.

Cheers :)

It sound stupid now.... but I did also notice it beginning of the week when the weather was hot. When I cruze in top gear and then give some gas.

It must be the warm weather.

Pinking is laymans' terms!

Pinking is the name given to the noise which arises when fuel ignites prematurely, producing high pressure waves in the cylinder before or at TDC. Various causes- excessive heat, wrong heat range plugs, low-lead fuel, high compression pressure. A car engine will make a noise which sounds like "pink, pink, pink, pink", harder to hear on the bike.

Cure if all else is ok is to avoid accelerating hard at low revs. I suppose you could retard the ignition a hair. It is not to be tolerated or encouraged as it will damage the engine.
