Not used for 2 years

Hi all. I have bought a R1150GS from a mate which has not been started for the past 2 years. We have established that the battery needs replacing but what else should I be doing before using it. Sorry if this is covered on another thread.

Plugs out, check it turns over, plugs in, new battery and top up with fresh petrol, then start it.
Personally I would fun it up to temperature then change the oil and filter, do a full service checking the brakes and make sure there are no flat spots on the tyres from standing

Replace battery, Start it up, wonder why the engine won't run right, re seat the throttle cables, pump up the tyres, ride it to the fuel station, fill up with fresh fuel, ride it back, oil and filter change, brake fluid flush,

2 years is not that long!

My 2002 1150 had also spent two or three years gathering dust, when I bought it. Depending on the year, a lot of these bikes were fitted with a Meta alarm and immobiliser. If yours has one, be aware that they weren't very reliable and can cause some quite bizarre and apparently unrelated starting and electrical problems, flat batteries, etc., if and when they start to fail. I had a new starter motor and at least two new batteries before we identified the culprit. Bike has run fantastically ever since ...

But first....
Open the air box and make sure that the mice hasn't turned the filter into a nest.

You also might want to take the plug caps off, press the starter for a short while to get the oil moving and up to pressure. Then put them back on and start it. Good shout ref checking for mice in the airbox.

careful, good way to damage the ignition unless you put some spare plugs in the leads and make sure they earth out.

Make sure that you can undo the filler fasteners on both the gearbox and final drive before removing the drain bolts
