now i know why previous owner sold bike to a dealer....clutch slipping

Any dealer worth their salt would rectify it, given that it was sold so recently.

A salutary lesson to be remembered when buying a secondhand bike from a dealer on the very first occasion get it into top gear on a slight hill and wind it right up full throttle from about 3k right through to the redline several times if the clutch is goosed it will let go at about 6k . If its goosed take it right back straight away!

On the very first occasion, top gear and redline it, repeat several times :D

AS mentioned before Check that the end of the hand guard is not preventing the clutch lever from fully extending it only takes a mm to make these bikes slip a clutch under load

ALSO there is a small knurled plastic knob on the under underside of the lever make sure that it is not screwed in

I have had mine screwed out from day one

I actually saved two folks from being out of pocket They left their bikes down to me to get clutches replaced and I decided to "Check" stuff before splitting the tractor

One had a guard that was fowling the lever and the other some twat had been playing with the distance adjustment not knowing what it was for

the clutch slips...open the throttle accelerating hard and revs go up then settle back down...feels viby till it stops slipping.

Ehm quite possibly gone beyond the fowling lever bit "BUT" still worth checking

checked handguard and adjustment screw and there both fine....
cheers for that....

Happens all to often, bike gets traded in with a not too obvious fault. New owner and dealer get a nasty surprise. It's not nice. :(

Nice for the bod who sold it, when told by his mates (as we often see advised on this site) to "Get rid, ASAP, mate". Bikers, you see, you just can't trust 'em.

if I really don't get any joy with the dealer then I will get the clutch done cos I do love the bike and the amount of service history and money spent on this bike makes it worth it....it had only very recently new battery...tyres...full service and inspection by bmw...all filters and oils done...full diagnostic report...
I suspect that he spent a lot on this bike then faced with cost of a new clutch decided to cut his losses....one previous owner
if I do have to get it done how much would I expect to pay..main dealer and other options...
cheers for everybodys input....

Take it you have checked the fluid level? The level rises as the clutch wears eventually no room left in the reservoir and clutch can't return fully and slips.

You say you have had the bike for two weeks. The law is quite clear, the dealer has to either give you your money back of fix it to your satisfaction. Talk to the local Trading Standards before you go back to the dealer if you are in any doubt as to your rights. Don't even think about paying yourself.

It may not have a clutch problem. Could be oil seeping through the crankshaft main seal, balancer shaft seal or gearbox seal and causing the contaminated clutch to slip.

Had the dreaded crank end seal go on my old K1200RS, turned the good condition dry clutch into a slipping wet one. On that bike there is no oil seal where the gearbox bolts to the engine so I had an oil leak as a clue. Fixed the seal and fitted a new clutch over a weekend. A fair old project even with the service manual...

Does the gearbox rattle in neutral but go quiet when the clutch love is pulled in?

The tappet style noise is caused by excessive clearance at the gearbox input shaft. Who knows why BMW could not use a car type clutch with toroidal shape release bearing. Their design is really not good leading to side loads at the gearbox input shaft.

no id doesn't make any noise as far as I can tell....

ok so heres an update....
went to the dealer and I told him about the clutch slipping....
now ive never bought a bike from a shop before...normally get them from ebay or other ways....
so when I told dealer of the problems I was having I was kind of expecting the worse....
how wrong was I.....after a chat and coffee and buiscits im taking the bike back on Wednesday and hes going to do a road test...then if clutch is slipping he will order
a new clutch kit from north oxford bmw and the job will get done....
I asked if they had a bike I could use to get home and he said no but he will pay for taxis....
north oxon bmw get trade ins but because of age or milage they don't sell to the public they sell to this dealer...he gets full trade on all parts from them...
he gets about 10 bikes per month that way....
well that's me happy and if all goes well ill never buy another bike from anybody else....

Fabulous news. Not all dealers are trying to make a fast buck. :thumb

I recently bought a car from a dealer. I "could" have done better privately but the hassle (and cost) of running about to find a good one would eat into the savings.

most bikes I get are normally around the 2k mark and buying privately can be risky....I got this one while I was out on my Honda nt650 Deauville.
I popped in to see this bmw...loved it so took it for a spin....I just took it for a potter around oxford....what I should have done is given it shit then id have noticed the slipping clutch....
I wouldn't have bought it but im still glad I did...once the clutch has been done
I proberly could have bought the same bike for less privately but this time chose a dealer....
he did give me a very good price on my Honda as a px...in actual fact he gave me more then I paid for it....

you have given NOG a name check, what is the name of this honest trader?

roadperformancemotorcycles.co.uk
always got bmw in stock and most makes....
