Whichever prick at Garmin decided to split Europe between north and south (and how the fuck northern France is in Southern Europe, I have no idea) should be strung up by the bollocks and beaten to death.

2610 would have been fine

I have a paper Michelin map of Calais you can borrow

Laugh all you like, we're in France, and you losers aren't.:dabone

Well, I think we're in France!:P

Are you leading him all the way home?

If so, throw in some off road tracks to spice things up a bit. He is on a Rallye after all :D

Detailed maps not being displayed on the device

Nutty assures me he IS in an area that IS covered by the detailed northern map.
If he isn't then he is indeed a chimp and I'll be forced to tell the world about his and Keith's.....

Detailed maps not being displayed on the device

Only just seen this thread .
When I bought a Halfords cheap ex-display Garmin LMT50 recently, the first thing I did was update the maps. But I was at g/fs place and wifi was crap and it didn't load all the maps properly - I noted that it had only loaded Europe North and France and Spain were missing when you looked at the countries available.
When I got home and re-loaded the latest update, all maps loaded and France/Spain re-appeared.

So Nutty may have done something similar and if the update was interrupted, not all maps may have installed correctly.

But I did check through the first day or so to make sure it was working BEFORE I left !!

My thanks to all the contributors for their invaluable input.

The morals of the story, children? If you intend to use your GPS device as your sole form of navigational aid, make sure it is fully functional before you set off. Not least, ensure that any map or software update made just before departure is properly installed and that the device continues to function just as you imagine it should.

Remember too that if a map is labled 'north' or 'south', before you depart make sure that your perception of what constitutes 'north' and 'south' matches with Garmin's vision of the world. To do this, drag the device's map around to the geographical areas you'll be traveling to, zoom in to make sure all the detailed road data is there. If it's not, rectify the situation before you set off and that the correct map area is fully installed and functional. Similarly, make sure that any routes you intend to ride display and work as they should. Straight lines, that do not sensibly follow the roads, probably indicates that something is wrong.

These simple rules are henceforward to be known as: Nutty's Law. I am sure there'll be more morals to learn when he next hoons his awesome steed out.

Not sure if this helps but on the Nav V if you import a GPX file at version 1.1 you get straight lines instead of following the roads. You need to import version 1.0 GPX files to get it to work properly.

On a side note, I'm reading all these threads because I'm thinking of getting a Nav VI tomorrow to replace my Nav V but it's not looking like it's worth it.

Would piss my pants if London is on the Northern map. The feckers who live down there will be livid :D

but if you then recalculate the route, I think it works fine once installed on the Nav5- right?

Audio is a nice touch to this thread - never liked that song before; but strangely I am singing along :D
