They have made it as far as a BMW dealership, which is a bit like going to a Tesco car park to chill with like minded souls. I wonder if the biscuits are up to scratch? I had to tell the chimp that a BMW GPS device holds a database of dealerships. Of course he could have looked online for one..... but hey, BMW are apparently installing chimp Nutty's device with the correct map so they can be on their way, other forms of navigation not to be relied upon naturally.
I had this same issue last week whilst on a trip to the Belgium Ardenne. Routes all planned in and looking fine until I get on the eurotunnel. The Nav 5 then wants me to go up to Hull and cross into Zeebrugge. I then had no maps (or calculations) until we crossed into Belgium. On ride outs all was ago until we crossed into France - after 10 miles or so it all went blank again. I'd assumed it was my Nav5 but I now think it might be a bug with the latest software. I'd just updated to 2018.2 maps before we left - however - two others with Nav5s running 2018.2 were ok. I too tried reinstalling maps (took MacBook with me) and reseting the unit.
It's not a bug in the device's software. The device is running exactly the detailed maps it has installed in it. That those detailed maps do not include where you are or if they are simply not turned on (selected) is not the device's fault.
Where there does seem to have been a problem for some (not all *) users is where a new map update has brought in just Northern Europe, as defined by Garmin. Why this is happening to some users but not others and the methods used to overcome the issue, is the matter of some considerable debate. The general opinion seems to be leaning towards the more up-to-date version of Garmin Express being installed the better.

Maybe operator error or an old version of express installed or maybe as you say a bug.
I was only suggesting that I don't think that the bug lies in the device. For whatever reason I think it sits somewhere between the computer and Garmin Express ie. I think that one set of maps is not being sent over. I haven't seen the problem on any of the four devices I've updated but others have. Some seem to be fixed by reloading Garmin Express.

Well, today was fun. We went to a BMW garage, so they plugged it in to the computer to install the maps. After half an hour, they said the update would take 6 hours.
So we pulled the plug on the update, and went to Belgium, where the maps work.

It turns out my Nav 5 is suffering the same problem. Tried updating maps several times recently but always got a red banner on screen saying there has been an error. Now i don't have southern urop.

It would make more sense to be able to choose which countries you actually want installed, as there are a few countries that I'm not likely to visit any time soon. And when I do, just download them, rather than clogging up the memory in the meantime with maps I don't need.

Garmin Mapinstall may allow this.
It does indeed or just areas of large countries such as spain or france

Having picked up the gist on Farcebook, I have already offered to post a small inflatable globe for Nutty to use.
His ride report is going to be brilliant.

It's lucky he doesn't work in IT....
(It's hard not to laugh, but having recently downloaded the new map (2018.10) to both laptop and device, I'm going to check on the device that it's all there!)
