IMO a small hole in the bottom of the swing arm makes a lot of sense. They exist in many tubular steel swing arms after all.
The internal bearings are not the only issue. The paralever grunion bearings move over very few degrees so the grease gets rubbed away and before long they will be metal on metal, wearing flat spots on the rollers. Rolling bearings should normally be packed only 50% full so the grease can circulate. Rocking rollers should be packed solid so the grease has to push past the rollers. This gives a better chance they will survive over time.
On the GS it makes sense to change the final drive oil the old way - Undo the paralever and turn the FD back so oil drains out of the speedo sensor hole. This takes only a few minutes longer and most importantly helps to recirculate the needle roller grease.
Mikey did my FD at about 50K miles old. There were no nasty oil colours but it had begun to leak from the wheel bearing. Mike said the internal bearings were "all ready" (for replacement). I'm glad to have bitten the bullet and got it done and Mike's costs are not silly.
