Odd VIN Question....

Last summer I did a full strip and rebuild of my 1200GS Adventure MU.

I had the frame powder coated, which has obscured the VIN. Being the impatient idiot I am, I forgot to scrape back the paint before completing the build. With the MOT looming, I want to strip back the paint, but owudl like to try to minimise how much I strip.

The VIN is in the form of a long set of characters and numbers, prefixed and suffixed with a "*". Could someone measure the distance between the "*" characters and the height of the characters.

As you can see from the photo below, I have no indication where they are :

I have a 09 r1200gs on the bench at the moment.
All dimensions in MM
The trapezoid shaped Vin plate is 104 across centreline.
Height of digits 7.
Length of digits to outside of asterisk`s 68.
centre of digits 2 above plate centreline.
Start 30 from right hand side.
Finnish 6 from left hand side.

A bit late now but when I am building new frames, I stamp the VIN in the headstock and then glue a strip of 1mm aluminium with silicone sealer over the VIN.
This protects it against blasting and powder coating and is easy to remove, ( then give it a light coat of frame colour and lacquer).

On my 08, the VIN plate is welded across the subframe just below the top yoke steering bearing mount.

Mine was masked off when I had the subframe powder coated but it looked shlte. The VIN plate is stainless steel so I simply masked off the welds, paint stripped the whole plate and left it bare metal. You will need to take off the petrol tank top cover or risk damaging your bodywork paint.

Is it a requirement of the MOT to be able to read the VIN? I never realised this if so.

Yes, I believe it is Steve....

....."A Vehicle Identification Number not permanently displayed, incomplete or not legible".... is an MOT failure (section 6.3, MOT Test Manual)

Stainless? I did not know that...
When I took the parts in, the company was confident about what needed masking up and preferred to do it themselves, "so it is done properly".

The fuckwits barely masked anything, and when they did they just used paper masking tape. It took me 5 weeks to rescue the engine cases...

Do they also powder coat 'garden gates' too

Just looked at a 2012 GS and the spacing is different.
Checked the plate and as Bendy says it is stainless, so would strip the whole face of the plate.
By the sound of it you have more experience of stripping the powder coating than most ( engine casings) so I wont offer an opinion.
