Just got back to find rear tyre and brake coated in oil, Rear wheel RH seal (big plastic rotating cap) has blown, has anyone changed this at home? If so do I need any special tools?

Ye need a special puller so I've been told
not uncommon as I'm on my third one:(

Had something similar + had to wait 3wks for a special tool from Germany, as mine was the first one Vines had come across.

I'm sure somebody has managed to do it DIY without the tool - try a bit of searching.

Had a look, should be ok to remove the seal using a self tapper, however anyone any idea how big a socket I will need to reseat the new seal?

My dealer replaced my rear seal on my 1200GS without any special tool at all. I believe that careful use of a small screwdriver may have been what was used, BUT DONT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT ! Furthermore, I know that it only took a few minutes cos it was done whilst I waited.

Here's a pictorial done by someone from ADVrider. No special tools used, just a bit of inginuity. You might also be able to use a thin walled socket or bit of tube to fit the new seal.

Thanks for that, I reckon I will be able to use the old seal to drive in the new one. Did the dealer top up your oil?

Anyone know what spec the sealed for life oil is?

seal

use a self tapper to get it out. use old seal to put new one in.
no special tools needed.

do it on the side stand otherwise oil will pi55 out.

Thanks for all of the replies and links, hope to order seal tomorrow. Pi55ed off though as only done 6,000 miles and missed a good days riding today.

Noticed that mine was leaking when we got back from Thuxton.

Replaced while I waited at Wollaston.

1500 miles................................

WTF £ 12,000??

My ducati took longer to go wrong:eek:

No I bought bike privately in Dec with 3K on clock, it's a late 04. Just ordered seal, thankfully in stock (perhaps that tells it's own story) enquired about oil Castrol SAF X0 £28 per litre:eek:

Foggy did you replenish your oil and if so what with?

Replaced seal yesterday night, test rode today...all seems well fingers crossed.

Self tapper did not work, think I was too worried about going in too far and damaging the bearing so used a ground down screwdriver as per the ADV post, worked a treat.

Thanks for all of the info and especially to Foggy as I was originally planning to do the job on the centrestand. Even on the side stand there was a steady seep of oil once the seal was removed.

Funnily enough the oil didn't look, smell or taste like gold just cost as much.
