Oil again

My bike was in for a routine free security check and they topped up the oil - half a litre of Motul 5100 10W50 and charged me just over 5 euros. My fault - I should have checked it myself beforehand; mind you that is all it has used in 12000 +kms (ignoring the 10000 km service.)

picked up new gs in november - done 1500 miles now - havent had to put any oil in upto now (and yes do check regulary) , after 600 mile service was told to use 10/40 mineral....

Currently using Putoline 10W/40 DX4 all year round.

Think that I'll change to Putoline Force 4 15W/50 at my next Service (18,000 miles) - seems like a good compromise for the UK and for warmer European Summer touring.

I for one will be changing the oil and filter more regularly than advised in the schedule (something I've always done with all of my own vehicles - not with company cars though).

My view is:
- It can't do any harm
- May make the engine last longer

I run quality 20/50 mineral in my 1200 GS-A. Changed it at 300 miles (was told it was a good idea) and at first service. Coming up to 6K and the oil usage is negligable and although it still rattles a bit, the engine runs as smooth as silk.

In a recent trip to Valencia, 4 GS`s used half a litre between them in a total of approx 14,000 miles!!

Car oil is fine, there's no need to pay for expensive bike oil. castrol GTX for cars over 70,000 miles was recommended to me. well the boxer sounds like an old tub when it;s new. Great bike, terrible noise!

Synthetic is too good for this engine, bog-standard 20/50 does it just fine. A good synthetic will last 20,000 miles but not in a boxer engine. My dealer has always advised 20/50 (Castrol GP) mineral oil. At 24000 miles I might go semi-synth next time as it now uses almost as little oil as a Honda!:hide
