Oil coming from drive shaft

Spoke to the warranty guy and he said that I wouldnt be covered for the USA anyway. Its only a Europe policy. Worth knowing I guess for the future.

May be worth mentioning the size of this GS forum with readers uncomfortably digesting your plight using their 'BMW Adventure bike' in another country.....maybe some goodwill could come your way:)

Just rang pidcocks in Notts and they quoted £980, throw the shipping on and another couple of days waiting round in Denver and I`m not far of the US price.

SO here we are

Just just changed the oil on the final drive and very few metal particles came out. Just some microscopic bits you could just see in light.
There is no play in the wheel and since I put the fresh oil in the grinding has stopped?

Just taking it for a spin for an hour to see what happens.

Whats tha reckon you lot?

Still leaking

After I took mine in for warranty repair last week for similar leak/noise problem, it reoccured with 20 miles when I picked it up today. Not happy, but garage is picking it up tomorrow. Good luck with replacement...I know Motorworks recently had a load of shop soiled ones from some trike conversions.....

Have you sourced the oil leak yet? Was it FD or gearbox? Any evidence up the swing arm when you had it split?

When was the FD oil last changed? Any particles stuck to the speedo pick up?

No play in bearings is good news. Did you check for lateral play when you had the swingarm split?

Note: large FD bearing (LHS) doesn't run in the oil, so particles shouldn't be from that one.

Check for bearing play again once FD is nice and warm.

What's the worse that can happen?

You can't end up with a double fecked FD can you?

It's only a risk of if going bad somewhere down the road.

Test ride it then hope for the best???

Gaz has a spare FD being posted to him as we speak and will carry it with him in case of a big problem. It should make it home for a proper strip down and examination:thumb

We had 2 outer seals leak on my last trip but both magically cleared up. I think it was due to overfilling and the heat.

Just done 800 miles round the Rockies on my dodgy Final drive, no leaking and no problems at all.
Have changed the oil twice and there has been particles on the speed sensor.
Going to change oil again tmrw before I head off through Kansas.
