Hi all,
Anybody got any super-funky ideas for undoing a very tight oil filter on an 1150gs?
The filter tool just keeps slipping round cos the numpty who put it on (not me by the way) overtightened it.

Help!

Bang a couple of screwdrivers in it,opposite each other, and then get a bar inbetween them and off it comes:thumb2

Try wrapping emery paper around the filter and forcing the tool on. Using the tool at as much of an angle as possible might also help.

The problem is often caused not so much by overtightening but by not oiling the seal.

Good luck.

get filter tool , drill x2 holes in it to take chunky wood screws , not long and thin , knock hole in bottom of filter , this lets the oil out first, smoke fag ,drink tea . put on tool, knock in screws all the way ,undo , have another fag and tea ,( or if proper tosser ......pork pie and tea )

Wet and dry around the inside of the filter tool. Whack it on the filter, undo.

Works everytime.,

Beware of punching holes in the filter, once you've gone down that road you can't ride the bike anywhere to have it removed :D

Thanks one and all, I'll give the emery paper trick a go first.
Think wrecking the filter to get it off is gonna be the last resort else I cant ride the bugger anywhere if it all goes t*ts-up! (as mentioned).

Yes, if you punch into the filter it might tear apart (the metal is thin) so there's nothing left to grip. But then you could rip out the element and make a peg spanner from metal tube to locate in the holes in the filter base (the ring of holes you see from the outside). If you go this way, measure the hole spacing on the stuck filter as the new one might be different. As I found...

My last filter change the old champion one did not want to come off, I drilled four holes in the filter tool and screwed four thick stubby self tappers through them into the filter, off it came :thumb2 I have savaged many a car filter with screwdrivers and the like but would avoid that on a recessed one like the GS

If it's a shitty Hi-Flo one be careful because it may be spinning at the plate up by the engine

They are absolute crap and I've had to cut 2 (on 2 different bikes) apart open them out and weld a bit of metal to the plate to get the feckers out !

And I always fit Mahle OC91D every time :beerjug:

Spoil sport:D

And steer well clear of the K&N oil filters with the 17mm nut made of cheese. .

;)

Maybe you have a filter with 15 cornes. 14 corner wrench is slipping with that.
Some aftermarket filters have 15 corners.

Done!
Used some pretty coarse sandpaper in the filter tool and voilla!! With a little persuasion from some 1/2 inch kit it was off!

Thanks for all the tips and help, worked a treat!
