Hello and merry X-mas to all of you,
first of all a great THANK YOU to all of you who contribute in this forum with impressive knowledge and a great sense of humor. For me, this forum is the place to look for advice what ever I would like to know about my R 12 GS even though I did not have too much to contribute with myself so far.

Bought my bike early 2006 new over here in Bergen/Norway which means that guaranty will expire soon. Not good news on one hand, on the other hand I do not have to hand over my loved bike to the muppets in the only BMW-appointed shop in reach anymore. When I got the bike back from last service I did find not less than 6 failures just by taking a close look and during washing the bike. That tells something about the complete lack of knowledge and dedication.

Preparing therefore to carry out service and repairs myself in the future. Have done quite some mechanical work earlier and should be able to do the not too complicated things on my own.

But....what do I do in case I need a repair done that does exceed my own capabilities???? Hope I'll not find my gearbox leaking one day...most likely I would have to try on my own anyway.

Here my questions:

I know there is a special tool for oil filter removal. Is it really required or just nice to have?

The workshop expert did manage to scratch away quite some paint from the oil tube that on the left side of the engine goes upwards to the oil cooler. Does someone know, what kind of paint I could use to fix that and where to get it?

Thanks for your help.

Best wishes for a happy new year with many safe and enjoyable miles to all of you.

Best regards
Joerg

You can get a cheap filter wrench from Nippy Normans (see link above). If you want to torque the filter up as per spec then yes you do need the wrench.
