Be careful you get the right one. I managed to somehow order a filter and end up with a friggin' 1200GS LC filter which is taller and needs a different wrench. Part numbers written on filters are similar in places. And identical in places. LC filter is taller with 14 flats. Old GS is shorter with 12 slots.

Too fuckin' late when you've drained the oil, filled the new filter with oil and spun it into place. Only to find you can't tighten it up. I could have somehow tightened it into place but suspect the sump guard would have fouled it.

Tomorrow's job is go out and buy a filter so I can refill my engine.

Lesson learned.

For things like this I go to BMW. A cockup then allows some come back.

Plus the BMW one for my 1150 came with loads of gaskets/washers. I would imagine the 1200 is the same.

Clean the filter and do it up hand tight. Space is restricted but there should be no need to use the wrench to fit an oil filter.

When it comes to remove it just gently knock the wrench onto the old filter with a hammer. Its scrap anyway by then and a lot less messy than pushing a screwdriver through. :o

Agree with above. You should never tighten a filer on beyond hand tight. If you do it right it will remove by hand as well with a grunt.

Got the correct filter fitted ok yesterday. And used the wrench to tweak it up tight enough as always. I cannot get a hold of the GS filter to simply tighten it by hand, far less remove it by hand. The fact that a wrench is being used does not mean the filter will be over tightened. The skill is in using the tools appropriately. And no, I don't know what the torque setting is for the oil filter.

Or for the gearbox drain and fill plugs that were removed and replaced this afternoon. BTW the gearbox oil was black and disgusting so I'm hoping for great things when I shake it down tomorrow.
