Oil Leak - Bevel Box

Just noticed an oil leak from the bottom of the bevel box on the final drive. Its enough to have covered the sidewalls of the tyre in oil, due to it dripping whilst on the sidestand.

There has always been dirty with an oily film on the bottom of the box, but I've never given it much attention. I noticed it yesterday as when left in the garage over the weekend (on the mainstand) it left a puddle of oily water on the floor.

There's no play at all in the rear wheel, everything else looks fine.

Anybody else had something similar??

Had one or two in for a similar thing - replaced seal in final drive and all was well once more. Seals are readily available so your local dealer shouldn't have a problem getting required parts to repair your pride and joy

Has you bike been on the side by any chance..? The gearbox oil can leak out and drip down along the shaft drive so it looks like the problem is with the rear wheel hub.... ? If that's the case then there's nothing to worry about, maybe a careful gearbox oil top up is all that's needed.

It hasn't been on its side since March, so I'd imagine thats not the problem. I've got oil pi$$ing out of the gearbox as well (another story) but I can't see any oil running along the outside of the final drive.

I'm hoping its only the seal - I don't really want a new drive.

There can be a problem with the outer sealing ring maybe worth checking. see the attached service bulletin I found on the BMW IR net.

The oil is actually coming from the other side i.e. the disc side. Its difficult to find the actual source of the leak, as centrifugal force flings the oil all over the place. Plus I think its the wet weather that makes it look worse i.e. its oily water that drips rather than pure oil. Its due for a service first week in November. I'm sure I'll manage another 1k on it.

It may not be a big problem.
Some bikes had a problem with the O ring, on the ABS sensor, leaking. if your brake pads have become contaminated you may want to replace them when the leak is fixed.

Tranny leakage

I don't know if it applies here, but I have recently had a workover on the clutch and gear box of my 09.05 1200GS.

Clutch was slipping sometimes. After dismantling the inside clutch cover was full of oil. The white cloth filter on pushpin from clutch slave smelt of gear oil was the proof of leakage (easy to check) and all sim-rings in the gearbox was changed. I was waiting for weeks in order for the workshop to get special purpose fitting tools for the sim-rings (actually getting them from UK). Additionally, the fuel pump/gauge combo and the rear wheel bearing have been changed.
