oil leak from rear gaiter

Good Evening Gentlemen/ladies,
I have just returned from work to find a small 'leak' coming from rear of the gaiter on the final drive.
I have done a quick search through here and the Font but seem to have got myself more confused
Should I just clean it up, replace the gaiter, and monitor the oil levels?? OR is this a job for the local mechanic to replace bearing etc??
Bike is a 2000 1150 with 48k on the clock.

Or someone might be along to say its a likely a small leak from the final drive - try the Font of all Wisdom where Steptoe has posted piece on replacing the input shaft seal. A little oil goes a long way and all that (the offer still holds)

Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately I will have to turn it down......I couldn't sell a bike thats broken!!!!
Had a look in the Font as I stated in my original post and just got myself more confused...Do I leave it and monitor or do I book it in?? my choice I s'pose....just looking for some guidance

It will leak again... Just monitor the oil level at every engine oil change

Obviously it's hard to diagnose problems from a distance - never stops us trying though! Only you can decide how much peace of mind you want to pay for.

For my two cents - take a look - it won't go away.

if you've done the topping up of the oil in gearbox and final drive, then check the oil level, this will give you a hint,
but as it's been said a little oil goes a long way and it can look loads when smudged round the gaiter.

you could also take the tiewraps off the gaiter and have a look see inside to see if there's oil coming down the tunnel, though it has to said I get a bit of oil round the final drive gaiter on my 1150gsa but the FD and gearbox levels don't seem to vary between services but it's been like that for the last 10k miles without issue

I'm sure I read somewhere that the FD can weep a bit sometimes ? so keep an eye on the levels

Mine has been leaking for last 50k miles, just keep cleaning it off and change oils regularly and seems fine to date - does seem worse at some times and then doesn't seem to leak at all for a few months - using Castrol gear oil seems to help.

Being a bit of a scaredy cat I have decided to book the bike into Ocean Plymouth.
They have qouted me between £200-300.... still hopefully she will be ok for another 50k miles!

Thats an awful lot of top ups! oil aint quite That expensive (yet!).

I charge £120 all parts and labour £100 if it's a lazy day and all my post is out of the way and the sun is shining and i'm in a good mood and i like you.

Or £50 if you give me the final drive with the seals and sealing ring.

Unfortunately I don't know of any really good Independents around Plymouth that seem to want to touch what they class as a "specialist job."
I can assure you I would rather pay them than BWM!

Surly worth a trip putney is not the end of the world and a nice run from Plymouth, but don't count on the old git being in a happy mood, he was last week down the pub so thats it for another twelve months!!. (and the sun won't shine either!).
