Oil Leak

Hi Guys,

I just went out to take the bike for a fling and found it lying on the floor with engine oil on the floor. The bike’s a 1200 GSA. I don’t know how it ended up on the floor but let’s deal with that later.

I stood it up, waited a couple of minutes and started it but it sounded clunky so turned it off.
I parked it up (another couple of minutes) and then checked the oil and there was none showing in the glass.

My question is this: As I don’t know how much oil is left in there, do I just top it up until it shows in the glass, then run it and adjust? Or is there some technical BMW wizardry that has to happen to charge the system? My dealer’s Service dept is closed today and the front desk types won’t commit.
And in case it needs taking to BMW, of course, my warranty just ran out last month :evil:

Just top up till its half way up the glass. Run till warm put on centre stand wait 5 mins then check again. As long as there is oil visible in glass it should be fine. Top up as required to about half up the glass. Good to go. Why was bike on its side ?

The bike was in a windy spot and had a rain cover on it so it COULD have been blown over. Possibly. Maybe. But my initial thought was, ‘What bastard pushed my beloved bike over?’

My old rt 1200 was knocked over by a bus in the depot a few years ago. It was on its side for most of the day. I picked it up and started up and rode it home no problem. I’d be more worried about leaks from the battery if it’s a conventional lead acid. JJH

Check on centre stand, run till warm, then shut off, check on centre stand again. Oil should be visible in glass preferably half way up. Top up as required.

I hadn’t thought of that but I did see oil all over the pot and on the floor but how much comes out and how much forms a puddle?

I read the manual and it talks about not getting a correct reading until the oil is hot. I guess I’ll top it up until I can see some first in the glass, then run it and, check and adjust, yes?

Another point is, why do cars have 36 weeks warranty and bikes 24?

As per my first post. Warranty ? God knows, the 1250 has 36 months but hexheads had 24. Given the problems the 1250 is having thats no bad thing.

Yup your buggered if its covered, and the wind gets up. I always leave in gear while on side stand after i had my brand new VFR V-tec roll off the stand and fall over.
