OK guys...2002 1150 GS 3,000 Miles. The oil pressure light is staying on. I have checked the obvious, oil level etc. I have had a look around this forum, and it seems that the sensor itself is a known weakness. Note, the 'bike has not been jetwashed, but was parked in a field overnight, before the problem started. If I disconnect the wire at the sensor, the light stays on. If I remove, and earth the sensor wire, the light still stays on. I cannot get the light to go off, whatever I do. Do you still think it's a faulty sensor ?

Many thanks for any help you can offer.......

Jonnie

I have endless problems with the oil warning light everytime the 'temperature' 'gauge' ie LCD bars get above halfway. Basically if the engine gets hot, and wet (ie dumped into a big muddy pond in belgium) the oil pressure light stays on.

Reving it above 3k for several minutes (you need to be really stupid or bloody desperate to do this) and then taking it to a main dealer, waiting an hour before they can find the time to look at it, seems to ensure that it does not come on again until you get it hot and wet again....

But your symptoms suggest a clear sensor failure - as I understand it the sensor is on a fail to negative ie if it fails it assumes the oil pressure has failed, if you disconnect it it assumes the the sensor has failed which assumes the oil pressure has failed ...

The sensor itself is just below the oil sight glass - spray it with WD40 - the wires to the sensor are more likely to go than the sensor itself.

Sorry if this does not help much, you would get a much better answer from Neil, only he is to busy drinking Lattes on the Kings Road..... a man has to have meaning in his life........

Replace

Mine did the same a couple of months back. New sensor is about £8 and is easy to fit. Best replace it and at least rule it out.

OK - had same problem.
First check the wiring that runs from the sensor along the fins of engine...it is clipped into place and often losses integrity at these points due to heat melting the wiring insulation. This results in intermittant light flashing or staying on depending on moisture, heat etc. This can be remedied with insulation tape. If it is not this problem then it is most definately the sensor itself - remove (just screws out) and check, sometimes may just need some lubing as it is a very simple mechanism. Otherwise replace as matter of course.

Many thanks guys, you hit the nail right on the head. I cleaned the sensor and connection, but no joy. I then had a look at the wire itself, and sure enough it had clearly been effected by the engine heat, it was also very tightly routed. 1 minutes worth of messing about, plus 1p worth of consumables, and all is well again. Shame B*W couldn't do it. If it should fail again, its new sensor time. 8 quid is still a cheap fix, even to for yorkshireman!

Thanks again
