Hi all,

I finally decided to tackle removing the oil sight glass on my 1150. Spent weeks reading every thread, looking at videos and noting every trick. Simple - shouldn’t take more than an hour or so.

Yeah, right.

I’ve gotten the glass out, but the body and rubber are seriously welded in.

I’ve tried putting a screw in at various points to give something to lever against (they just ripped out) and ‘folding’ the edge in to reduce the amount of grip the body has on the corroded edge - no success. It hasn’t moved a millimetre.

It currently looks like this:

The liquid is only wd40 - I’ve soaked the outside to see if it’ll let go any better.

The only thing I can think of doing is somehow splitting it into two halves - but I’m very reluctant to go near it with a dremmel.

Could anyone offer any advice please? I’m at my wits end!

Cheers
Mike

I always use a Long handled seal puller, no fecking about, worked everytime for me, and I’ve had seriously stuck over the years,

Who the feck bothers drilling holes and using self tapping screws..

Seal puller, work your around the the sight glass, takes 30 seconds, or 2 mins if seriously stuck … how easy do want it to be.

Forgot to mention, the first thing I tried after removing the glass was a 30mm seal puller and a slide hammer - it wouldn’t budge. The seal puller just ripped out. Then i resorted to screws etc.

I honestly can’t fathom why it’s so tight, or why with the work I’ve done so far it hasn’t moved at all.

Do you have any suggestions Steptoe? I guess surgically destroying it with a sharp chisel? Although The lack of removable sump has me concerned about any fragments falling in

I use one of those, easy peasy. I suspect Steptoes will be well worn.
Also useful for popping fork seals out.
Given the state of mine now, where am I best attempting to lever using a seal puller? Through one of the holes with the seal puller levering against a piece of wood?

Thanks Rusty!

I’ve got the bloody thing out now!

Ended up curling the edge in and getting a small claw hammer under it. I’ve got a seal puller in the post now….ill put it away for when I next need to do this!

The seal was white with crud - I can definitely see why a seal puller is the thing to use first time now.

There’s a tiny nick in the seal seat at about 9’o clock - I’ve seen worse in pictures online and I’m sure it’ll be fine as it isn’t right to the edge, so there’s still some good seat left.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I’m going for a brew.

Mike
