Looking for Vera
just got a used 1150gs ,last owner said he used semi-sythinsetic rockoil,
it sounds like a bag of hammers, wot oil will help if any, and would i have to flush
the engine first ? any ideas would be appreciated ?

car,nt spell but dotn gvie a hsit.

Semi-synthetic Rock Oil should be OK.

If this is your first GS, remember they do sound a bit agricultural compared to a Jap four, but knocking like a bag of hammers..........hmmmm - mine did that shortly after buying it and it turned out to be a shagged crankshaft. Find another BM and compare it first - have you got a warranty if it is anything out of the ordinary? Was it doing it when you bought it? If so, what did the seller say about it?

bag of hammers

mabey a bit strong saying a bag of hammers, it is noisey compared to a jap bike,
rode it home 230+ miles yesterday with out so much of a murmmer though,
read some threads about someone using diesle oil and wondered if this was a good idea !!!.
other than that the bike is just ppppuuurrreee sexxxxx.

Most BMs sound like this when they start up, only use semi-sythn oil as they dont like fully sythn (use it like its going out of fashion) check what little red says as I had a GS that only did 600 miles before the crank went, the engine had been built with the wrong size bearings at the factory.
BM eventually replaced the bike after 3 attempts to build the engine

Oi!! (To you southerners this is a northern term of endearment similar to 'good afternoon, can anyone help me?' ;-)
Stay with semi-synthetic and ***check your oil level regularly*** (Each time you go out!) Sometimes it'll show nothing then within 5 mins it'll be full!

They All sound like that, sir.

Yes - they really do sound really rough coming from a jap bike.

Mad thing is that they sound better and better the older they get.

Mine had 4000 miles on it when I bought it. Now with 12,000 it sounds much smoother.

I was speaking to a bloke with a canary yellow one the other day, with over 45000 miles on it. It sounded much sweeter than mine.

Engines take about 12,000 to run in.

DO NOT USE SYNTHETIC OILS UNLESS ENGINE IS FULLY RUN IN otherwise it'll take forever to run in and guzzle oil until it does - ask me how I know.

I use a standard non-synthetic engine oil and change it every 3000 miles.

Also, BMW dealers reccomend 10-40 oil, but the handbook reccomends more like a 20-50 for our (warmish) climate.

I'm using a 15-40 at the moment, and all is well.

Will change for 20/50 when I reach 15,000 (in about 2 months).

Good luck and enjoy.
