OIL

Hi,
I've just bought my first beemer. A salvage 03 2spark GSA and am awaiting the plethora of bits to arrive so I can get her on the road.
Nothing major, just bits and cosmetic bobs. You know, rocker cover, top yoke, screen, some plastics, clock mount, blah blah.
My question is, and its very basic, what oil do I put in him, Ive read a few posts about mineral verses synthetic, but as its only done 5000 miles I'm guessing its the mineral I should go for.

Please advise.

Oh, and if anyones got an Adventure tank knockin around, I'd like that too, until then, I'll content myself with my new Baglus tank cover. Out of sight out of mind etc etc....

I just stick Castrol GTX in mine. Worked fine for the last 40,000 miles. Probably best to do a search on oil – it’s been discussed many many times here.

Thanks, have a load of bits arriving from Motoworks tommorrow, tank cover from baglux, and new gen parts from BM who nows when.....

Got a quote for a new tank at £460 from the german firm Siebenrock which I thought was pretty good.

Its all just a case of bolting bits on as and when they arrive.

I can't wait, to ride it.

At that low mileage would stick to normal mineral oil untill it is run in say another 20k miles and then on to synthetic. Mine has also done fine on GTX the last 50k miles. I could not really notice the difference in the gearbox either with synthetic, mayby a slightly quiter vibration

My bevel box definitely had an affect with synthetic as it disintegrated about 100 miles after I changed from normal gear oil

Now being paranoid I stay well away from synthetic on my tractor.

Might just be easier if i use GTX, you use 20/50?

20/50, 15/40, or even 10/40 are all usually good enough. BMW dont specify a particular viscosity as such, they give you a viscosity temperature chart in the hand book. Remember that you do not need to use one of the expensive motorcycle specific engine oils, a decent quality car type oil is fine, GTX as mentioned previously for example; look for the API spec on container, go for something like SG, SH, SJ, there is also often an API diesel oil spec shown as well,eg; CF, CG, CH. Its OK to use these as well.

Well - BMW actually specifies a 50 viscosity oil if the temperature is above 20. I've heard that it's cold in the UK but not always below 20? Go for 5W50, 10W50 or 20W50 oil. The rest of the statement above is accurate.
